  1. “the Medicine Bag” By Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve

  2. Monday, August 25th • Some people think that our society doesn’t have ways of helping young people cross the threshold into adulthood. We need traditions and meaningful rituals for this important rite of passage, they say. In what ways do people today mark the passage into adulthood? Do you think there should be other ways of helping children to accept the duties and responsibilities of adult life? Do you think, instead, that things are all right the way they are? Write a paragraph (4-6 sentences) supporting your point of view by giving examples. If you have time, draw a picture to represent your point of view.

  3. Tuesday, August 26th • Write about how your life is different from one of your family members. What problems does this create for you? How do you deal with these problems?

  4. Wednesday, August 27th • Draw two Venn diagrams on the right side of your journal. Fill the first one with words, sketches, and symbols that contrast what Martin is like at the beginning of the story (left circle) to the way he is at the end, (right circle) after he receives the medicine bag. You might focus on his changed feelings about Grandpa. Don’t forget to fill in the inside circle with characteristics that have stayed the same.  For the second Venn diagram, compare and contrast the experiences of Martin and Cheryl. Include static and dynamic characteristics.

  5. Thursday, August 28th • Describe what goes through Martin’s mind as he is about to receive the medicine bag. How would you feel if you were in his place?
