  2. What did we believe about good government? • 1. Separation of Powers- power divided among three branches • 2. Checks & Balances- each branch checks the job of the other and stops the other from having too much power.

  3. We are Independent what do we do now? 1. We need a Government: Problems: 1. Because they were afraid of a king the Articles made Congress very weak 2. Congress could not tax (had to ask for donations from states) 3. Could not control trade between states or other countries • Articles of Confederation- each state has equal power • All states have representatives to a Congress • Each state only has one vote

  4. Northwest Ordinance Success of the Articles • 1. Plan for adding new states • 2. Must have public education • 3. Could not have slaves in new states

  5. Shay’s Rebellion We will get a Constitution! • Massachusetts farmers get angry they can’t pay taxes, lose land, and are jailed • Daniel Shay led a group of farmers to capture weapons and close the courts • Failed but showed the Articles were not working
