  4. Science Themes 1. Desert soil: Soil microbiology, soil oxidants, and soil formation. 2. Geology: Volcanos, rocks, Amboy crater, Cima lava flows and geology. 3. Photosynthesis: desert hypolithic algae, cyanobacterial soil crusts, and stromatolites. 4. Caves and lava tubes, paleolakes, and remote sensing: SBM Training 1

Teacher Organization • Where do you come from? • Near (CA, NV, OR) • Far away • (GA,NY,PA,IL,NH,WV,OH,SC,CO,MI,MA,NC,WA,IN) • Teachers divided into 6 groups • each group led by a Spaceward Bound Teacher Leader • Probably divided geographically • “Home Group” - science jigsaw • Science Theme - either: • Focus only on one • Sample them all SBM Training 1

Field Broadcasts • Wednesday, March 28, 2007 • One in English, one in Spanish • 1 hour long • DLN and webcast • Probably 9am PDT and 11am PDT • Will talk about • Science themes • What you’ve learned • How you’re going to use it in your classrooms • Primary audience is your students, schools • Start planning now! Why Are We Doing This? • Our goal is for you to bring • Exploration into your classroom • By day you do it - you explore: • Learn the science • Learn how to do the science • By night you figure out how to bring exploration into your classroom in the most authentic, inspirational and instructive manner possible Your students will be the ones going to the Moon and Mars !!! SBM Training 1

  11. Homework !!! • Why homework? • Get to know each other • Get to know the science • Start thinking about how to bring exploration into your classroom • Start your journals !!! • One copy of your homework goes in your journal, one gets sent to Liza SBM Training 1

Homework #1 Due Friday, February 9 (remember: one copy goes in your journal, one gets emailed to Liza) • You will receive an email by the end of this week that tells you who your Teacher Leader is, send them an email and they will tell each of you a bit of advice, based on their experience, to help you prepare for the expedition. Send an email to me and tell me what the advice was and how you will incorporate it into your planning and preparation • Science Scavenger Hunt: For each of the four Science Themes do a web search and find out as much as you can about each of the themes (this may include definitions, why it’s of interest, who does it, why is NASA interested in it, …) Write one 3/4 page essay on each Theme telling what you’ve learned about it. Total of 4 essays! SBM Training 1
