  1. AAA PROMS PILOT A Pherwani, Y Sinha (Medical Student), O Ehsan Department of Vascular Surgery University Hospital North Staffordshire

  2. AIMs • Patient Reported Outcome Measures • Quality of care measurement from a patient’s perspective • Self-completed questionnaires – PILOT project at UHNS

  3. Method - Finalised Questionnaire Proforma designed by medical student based on AAA QIP patient feed back surveys/focused groups and example questionnaire – used to collect data.

  4. Pre-Surgery - What did we collect? • Pre-surgery questionnaire patients recruited: M = 11, F = 1 • 4 Domains: • Diagnosis • Information • Pre-Operative Care • Quality of Life (discussed at the end)

  5. Diagnosis How did you find out about your AAA? Did you have any symptoms? Did finding out you had a AAA prevent you from ADLs? Did you feel the diagnosis was adequately explained?

  6. Information Once diagnosed were you given written information about Aneurysms/your operation? Would you have liked more information regarding your AAA surgery? Was the choice between Endovascular or Open repair discussed? Methods of giving further information. [1]

  7. Pre-Operative Care Were you given pre-op advice to follow? Was your surgery delayed/cancelled? Patient experience of pre-operative assessment

  8. Post-Surgery - What did we collect? • Post-surgery questionnaire patients recruited: M = 8, F = 0 • 3 Domains: • Post-Operative Care • Recovery • Discharge

  9. Post-Operative Care How would you describe the results of your operation? Which surgery did you undergo? Overall how are your AAA problems now, compared to before your operation?

  10. Did you have any of the following after your operation? Do you feel you received adequate post-operative information about complications? What aspects do you feel, could have been better explained? Did you have any complications following your surgery?

  11. Discharge Was there a delay in your discharge? How many days did you stay in hospital before being discharged, after your operation? ne [2] Were the staff able to address any worries or concerns you had? Were you told about the results of any follow-up scans? [3]

  12. Recovery Why did it not match your expectations? How long has it taken you to recover to your previous functional level after surgery? Did you feel an appropriate level of information was given about recovery? Not yet Did your recovery match your expectations?

  13. Were you given medication to take home? How did you find managing daily activities when you went home? How did you find managing daily activities when you went home? Was a follow-up date arranged?

  14. Quality of Life Pre-Surgery Post-Surgery Living arrangements Living arrangements Mobility Mobility Self-Care Self-care

  15. Pre-Surgery Post-Surgery ADLs ADLs Pain/Discomfort Pain/Discomfort Anxiety/Depression Anxiety/Depression

  16. Pathway for collection of Forms • Pre-op questionnaires given at Pre-Ams • Collected questionnaires sent to NVD data coordinator • NVD data coordinator then sends Post-op questionnaires 6 weeks after surgery with pre-paid return envelopes • Forms are scan-able and will be then given to audit department for compilation

  17. Conclusions • Early results with few patients • Good quality of care was demonstrated throughout • However patients wished for further explanation and written information • This was especially the case regarding their diagnosis, post-operative complications and recovery

  18. Limitations and Future Plans • Only carried out on 12 patients; data limited. • This is a first attempt at developing PROMs questionnaire for AAA patients. • We hope that this will help us identify areas of care where improvement can be made. • We aim to involve other vascular departments in collecting this information in the West Midlands region.

  19. UHNS AAA Results Data from the NVD Jan 2011 to August 2012 Data validated and entered onto NVD Elective AAA Open Repair 56 EVAR 100 Total 156 Deaths at 30 days – 2 Mortality – 1.2%
