  3. Introduction • My photo essay is the story of Hamish Murray, a 13 year old boy from Canberra, Australia, who has immigrated because of business for his parents, who work withUnited Nations. He has been living in NYC for a year. After spending time in the U.S., he has picked up many new ways of life while living here. This is Hamish Murray's journey. 4. Hamish Murray and his Family • Hamish Murray was born on June 21, 2002 in Cavalry hospital in Canberra, Australia. His parents are Kevin Murray, born in Toronto, Canada in 1961, and Naomi Murray, born in Sydney, Australia, in 1972. He was also welcomed by his sister Harper, born in 2000. Naomi was born in Sydney in 1972. Hamish was born in Canberra in 2002.

  5. Military Parents • Kevin, born in 1961, joined the Canadian Air Force at age 19, and was on exchange at the Edinburgh air base in Adelaide, Australia for 3 years. In 1996, he met Naomi, who was in the Australian Navy, at a party that they both knew the host.Kevin realized that he loved Australia so much, he resigned from the Canadian Air Force and joined the Australian one. He worked hard and progressed a lot. He has had journeys to Afghanistan and the UAE. Kevin Joined the Australian Air Force, and has many stories to tell.

  6. Kevin applied to be the defense attaché for the Australian military to the United Nations, and got the job. In 2005, the Murrays moved to Alabama for a year, before moving back to Australia. When they got back, military housing was provided for them; they lived in it for 4 months before buying a house closer to Naomi and Kevin’s work. They lived in that house for 4 years before moving to another one for a year. Kevin got the notice about working in New York in July 2014. Off to the U.S. This is the first house that the Murrays lived in while in Canberra. They lived in it for 4 years.

  7. Traditions in Australia… In Australia, Hamish’s family did not observe traditions that the Aboriginal Australians do. However, Australian traditions and ways of life in Australia they were used to are vegemite, a spread made out of yeast and other substances, made during the great depression to give children their nutrients; putting Australian ornaments on their Christmas tree, following rugby, cricket, AFL, which stands for Australian Football League, and hockey, which Hamish played. When Hamish was growing up, popular music was music that was popular in Australia. Australian Football is a mixture of rugby and American football, and is also known as footy. Hamish enjoyed playing it.

  8. …And New Ones in America New holidays that the Murrays have picked up in America are: Thanksgiving, 4th of July, and Halloween. Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Australia, nor is Halloween. Traditions that they have picked up are factors of their newer lifestyles and how they live them. A new holiday that the Murrays celebrate is Halloween, which is not celebrated in Australia. Kevin and his kids pose in front of an inflatable pumpkin.

  9. Social Changing Assimilations • Hamish and his family have assimilated to living in NYC by now being able to go around and use public transportation, and getting used to a different schooling system. Him and his family have changed in terms of what they eat. They are eating more “American” food. There are very few Australian restaurants (“Outback Steakhouse is horrible, and has nothing Australian”)(“The owners have never even been to Australia”). Hamish also enjoys skateboarding, which he picked up from his friends. Hamish discovered skateboarding from the friends that he has made.

  10. Hamish's Family Now And they lived happily ever after • Now, Hamish and his family enjoy the many wonders that American culture gives them. They eat at many different restaurants, take the subway and use other forms of public transportation, meet wonderful new people, and Hamish always enjoys exploring the city on his skateboard with his friends. He also enjoys playing hockey with me and our team. Hockey is a sport that Hamish played in Australia, and he still does now. Me Hamish

  11. The American Dream? (Conclusion) I asked Hamish: "So, do you think you and your family are living the American Dream?" • He replied: "I'm not sure if it's the American Dream, everyone in Australia wants to go to New York City and for me to live here for 3 years with my dad's work is just amazing". The Murrays are living a great life in NYC. This is them at a Mets game.

  12. Thank You!
