  1. Joint Modeling & Simulation Capability Working Group Weather Capabilities Worldwide Joint Training and Scheduling Conference Mr. Mark Webb DoD ASNE MSEA Liaison to USJFCOM LTC John T. Janiszewski Chief, Technical Development and Innovation Branch J7, Joint Warfighting Center, USJFCOM

  2. Outline • Challenge • Environment Representation for M&S • What is EDCSS? • EDCSS Training Event Support to date • Roadmap • Conclusion 2

  3. The Challenge • Training federations continue to increase in realism, and complexity, requiring higher fidelity environmental representations to drive realistic and consistent behaviors. • No existing capability to provide correlated support products across all four natural environment domains (Atmosphere, Space, Ocean, Terrain). • The use of realistic environment representations adds to the expense and complexity of managing large-scale training events. 3

  4. Solution • Environmental Data Cube Support System (EDCSS) • This briefing provides status on the capability of EDCSS to provide consistent authoritative environmental representation support products to the DoD training community 4

  5. The Natural Environment M&S Support Triangle Simulated Operational Products (C4ISR) Situational Awareness EDCSS Event Support White Cell Training Audience GoogleEarth Simulation Domain NWARS-ng • Acoustic Detection • Targeting • Mobility • CBRNE • ISR Collections • IR Targeting • MISREP Reports • Base Weather 5

  6. Bottom Line • EDCSS provides the full suite of capabilities required to effectively utilize realistic environment representations in training events • Key Capability of Joint Rapid Scenario Generation (JRSG) • EDCSS allows event planners to rapidly build multiple realistic scenarios that meet training objectives while supporting flexibility during event execution. • EDCSS addresses the wide-ranging and continually evolving product requirements of M&S applications. • EDCSS is the only developed capability to address all domains of environment representation in a relevant, usable, and cost-effective support process. 6

  7. EDCSS Concept Definition Environmental Data Cube Support System (EDCSS) Space Project Definition Simulation Integrated Environment Representation Atmosphere White Cell or Analyst Product Generation Ocean Distribution Terrain Integration COP (C4ISR) 7

  8. Why EDCSS? • Allows interoperable environmental representations and their effects increase realism and consistency within training events • DoD benefits from realistic simulation outcomes • Provides consistent views of the Environment to the Training Audience (C4ISR), Exercise Control Group, and Simulation domains • Training events benefit from being able to see environmental effects and they control the environment scenario being played • Reduces cost and manpower required to play events • Traceability of all product requirements • Auto-generation of all products for the selected scenario • Efficient runtime distribution and inject of data and effects • Promotes reuse through archival of base resources and completed event product suites 8

  9. Exercise Usage • - AFMSTT and JCATS played uncoordinated weather • No coordination with Exercise Control Group • Results less than optimal AC06 (EUCOM) TF07 (PACOM) TF08 (PACOM) AC09 &TF09 (EUCOM/PACOM) • EDCSS used to provide complete weather package • Weather integrated and simulated within exercise scenario • Used overlay functionality for simulations - Typhoon vignette (No simulated weather play) • First Federation Level EDCSS • Weather SME attended Planning Conferences • Weather integrated with Exercise Scenario • Used Overlay functionality only 9

  10. EDCSS Product Portfolio Satellite/Radar (Google Earth) Satellite 10 Radar Probability of Detection

  11. EDCSS Product Portfolio (Cont) Systems impact (stop light chart) Soil moisture content Weather synopsis Ocean wave dir/height 11

  12. EDCSS capabilities have greatest utility in supporting Joint and Service Training activities that leverage M&S Need end user advocacy within COCOM’s Formalize the integration of space, ocean, and dynamic terrain data to provide correlated natural environment in the training event process Road Forward 12

  13. Conclusion • EDCSS is a DoD enterprise solution that provides a rapid multi-domain scenario generation capability • Using EDCSS saves money and time during exercise preparation by reducing the manpower requirements to generate realistic scenarios • EDCSS fills a gap defined in the 2009 Strategic Plan for transforming DoD Training. 13
