  1. The Moon: Earth’s Satellite

  2. Do Now • Take out ISN and copy tonight’s homework in planner • Open your planner to last night’s homework • Label and date your ISN pages and then wait quietly • Page 24: Moon Diagram - 9/18 • Page 25: Moon Phase Lab – 9/18

  3. Moon Size ~ 1/4 width of Earth Radius of 1080 miles Gravity ~1/6 of Earth’s http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/IMAGES/SMALL/GPN-2000-001444.jpg

  4. Earth and Moon to Scale If Earth were a basketball, then the Moon would be a tennis ball, 23.5 feet away http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_rec.php?id=1624

  5. Rotation vs. Revolution • Rotation: spinning an axis (point) • Think of a top • Revolution: One object going around another object or a center.

  6. Think-Pair-Share • Do each of the objects below revolve or rotate? Explain. • Sun • Earth • Moon

  7. Fill in the blanks • The moon rotates on an axis once every 27.3 days but revolves around the Earth at the same time! • The earth rotates on its axis once every ___ hours. • The Earth revolves around the sun once every ________ days.

  8. The Moon rotates in 27.3 days. The Moon orbits Earth in 27.3 days. Because the Moon rotates and revolves at the same rate, we only see one side The Near Side The NEAR side There is NO DARK SIDE There is a FAR side….

  9. Moon Phases • There are 8 phases of the moon • New moon: Not visible? Explain why! • Full moon: Fully visible. Do you know why? • Waxing – getting bigger or increasing in size • Waning – getting smaller or decreasing in size • Crescent – less than ½ visible, but more than a new moon • Gibbous – more than ½ visible, but less than full

  10. Moon Phase Simulator • Visit: http://astro.unl.edu/naap/lps/animations/lps.swf or find the link on my wikipage • Play around with the site for 5 minutes before completing the handout.

  11. Moon Phase Oreo Lab • You must follow all directions • DO NOT EAT any Oreos or your lab grade will suffer! • You will work in pairs – each person will be responsible for creating 4 phases. • The other person will double check their partner’s work • All phases must be recorded in your ISN on page 25 or on the handout. Please answer all follow up questions on pages 25.

  12. You need: 4 Oreos, one plate, and one toothpick. • Each partner will separate their Oreos. • Scrape the icing off the cookies to create the different moon phases. • Draw a circle in the center of your plate to represent the Earth. The sun is at the top. • Lay the oreos out in a circle so the phases correspond to what you would see on Earth. • Write the name of the moon phase on the plate under each oreo. Your partner must double check your work!

  13. Oreo Lab Questions Answer on page 25 of ISN • Why does the moon shine? • Compare and contrast the positions of the Sun, Earth, & Moon during a new moon and a full moon. • Do the moon phases occur in a pattern? If so, what kind of pattern. Explain.

  14. Homework Two options. Pick one! 1. Scientific Language Card (next slide) 2. Draw a diagram with the sun, moon, and earth, and include/label as much information from today’s class as you can. Then color!

  15. Scientific Language Card • To be made on index cards for smaller pieces of plain, white paper (your choice!) • Use the words: waning, waxing, crescent, gibbous, rotation, revolution Definition of word Scientific Term Picture that represents the word Connection words: to help you remember the word

  16. Exit Task Update your Aha Connections Page (pg 20-21). We talked about motion in space today. Add a blurb titled “Moon Notes”and explain how the moon demonstrates movement in our universe.

  17. Do Now • Take out ISN. Be prepared to show HW • Record tonight’s HW in planner • One page 25 of ISN, answer the following questions • Did you see a pattern to the phases of the moon? Explain below. • Why does the moon change its shape?

  18. Lunar Eclipse • Eclipse: to cast a shadow • Lunar Eclipse: A shadow on the moon • Next full eclipse: 4/15/2014

  19. Solar Eclipse The sun is covered by the moon

  20. Why is a solar eclipse rarer than a lunar eclipse?

  21. Today’s Google Doodle Leon Foucault • Proved Earth rotated around an axis with his pendulum • Early discoverer of the speed of light

  22. What to study for the Quiz • All of the moon phases – be able to recognize them! • How does the moon light up and why does it change? • Solar vs. Lunar eclipses • Facts from the Bill Nye video • Rotation vs Revolution
