  2. What is a Colony? • A region that is ruled by a far away government. • In the American colonies, England was the far away government.

  3. Why would a country like England want to establish a colony? • New land • Gold • Natural Resources

  4. How are colonies established? • Charters are granted by King James I • A charter is official permission from the King

  5. The Virginia Company • Was a joint stock company • A joint stock company is one in which investors buy part ownership into the business in return for a portion of the profits • In 1606, they sent 144 settlers to the Americas on 3 ships

  6. Why would people want to move to a far away place? • To make a new start • Opportunities for better work • Religious freedom • Search for gold

  7. Economic Issues Couldn’t find work in Europe Couldn’t afford to own land in Europe There was work in every trade in the colonies Land was offered at a free or discount rate Human Rights Issues Freedom to practice their own religion Two Problems People Face

  8. What problems did colonists face? • Food • Shelter • New Government • Health care • Transportation • Weather • Poor farmland • Mosquito carrying diseases

  9. Who is Captain John Smith? • Established a local government • Forced settlers to work • Explored the area • Established trade with Native Americans • When he left, the colonies deteriorated

  10. Economic Upturn • John Rolfe establishes the tobacco trade in the colony with England • Established trade with the Native Americans after he married Chief Powhatan’s daughter, Pocahontas

  11. What is headright? • England gives the colonists 50 acres if you pay your own way to the colony • +50 acres for every family member over the age of 15 • +50 acres for every slave/servant brought over Land!

  12. Would a settlement of men last very long? • NO! • In 1619, the Virginia Company sent over 90 women to the colonies but men could only marry them if they could pay 120 lbs of tobacco to the VC. • Slaves were also brought over in 1619. 1 = 120 lbs

  13. Government • Burgesses • Two representatives sent by each of the 10 towns in the colony • Have some say in the government • House of Burgesses • Met on July 30, 1619 • In early 1920s, VC’s charter was cancelled by King James and Jamestown becomes a royal colony
