  1. SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY 2014/15 pan-London plannedcommissioning position: maintain commissions at 173 Planning for this profession is led by Health Education North Central and East London for the whole of London. Existing and raised issues There are two education providers delivering education and training for London, one of which offers the postgraduate course and the other, the undergraduate course. A large proportion of the workforce is employed in the community and outside of the NHS, and currently the workforce demand from these sectors is unclear. It is important for robust information to be gathered on these sectors in the future in order that their impact on education commissioning strategy can be understood. A data source informing workforce in the independent sector has been identified and will help to better inform planning during 2014. • Rationale for decision • An oversupply is forecast for this profession, with a predicted 22.7% oversupply in 2018/19. • Decreasing commissioning numbers is not recommended at this point: • Demand for the non-NHS sector is not clear. • Activity in in this sector is expected to increase as a consequence of increasing birth rates and other policy initiatives such as HVs expansion. • The recommendation is therefore to maintain at 173. Please note: 176 students were recruited in 2013/14, 3 above the 173 commissions agreed. • London workforce data 2013 A 22.7% oversupply is predicted in 2018/19.
