  1. Expository Writing Pointers Have an INTRODUCTION—clever, attention-grabbing, BUT focused on your thesis THESIS—you must have a clear controlling idea! State it directly, but artfully. EXPLANATION—stay on topic. Might try: Historical reference (even current events) to support Literary reference to support Logical/thoughtful reflection to support Focus on IDEAS about the topic! Do NOT turn it into a personal narrative. CONCLUSION—prove your point + connect back to thesis!

  2. Pointers for Planning Page • Before writing, make notes that look something like this: Thesis = Examples/Evidence Literature History Logical Argument Personal Example (not narrative story) Conclusion = Try to come up with ideas for all areas of evidence, then choose the best!
