  1. Take papers off side counter Write down your homework: None! Take out your Photosynthesis homework-I am checking it when the bell rings Do Now

  2. All living things need food. Some animals eat plants, some eat other animals – and some eat both.

  3. Food contains the chemical energy the body uses to do things – like run, think and grow.

  4. Trees and other plants don’t eat food. Where do they get the chemical energy they need to live and grow?

  5. } Photosynthesis the process plants do to make food from sunlight

  6. Intro to Bio Unit 1 Photosynthesis Process carried out by plant cells to make food from sunlight Why is photosynthesis important? Step 1: Uses the energy in sunlight to break apart carbon dioxide molecules

  7. Why is photosynthesis important? • Makes oxygen • Takes away carbon dioxide • Feeds all living things

  8. PLANTS Humans

  9. Intro to Bio Unit 1 Photosynthesis Process carried out by plant cells to make food from sunlight Why is photosynthesis important? Makes oxygen Takes away carbon dioxide Makes food for all living organisms Step 1: Uses the energy in sunlight to break apart carbon dioxide molecules

  10. Plants use water, carbon dioxide and sunlight CARBON DIOXIDE SUNLIGHT WATER to make a sugar called glucose, which contains the chemical energy they need.

  11. The waterused for photosynthesis is in the soil. Water gets to the leaves via the roots.

  12. Plants use carbon dioxidefrom the air to make glucose.

  13. Photosynthesis occurs in the plant cellsin the leaves.  Plant Cell

  14. Called “Light Reactions” (because it requires sunlight) Sun’s energy is used to break apart H2O and CO2 molecules into atoms in the chloroplast Step 1 of Photosynthesis

  15. Intro to Bio Unit 1 Photosynthesis Process carried out by plant cells to make food from sunlight Why is photosynthesis important? Makes oxygen Takes away carbon dioxide Makes food for all living organisms Step 1: Light Reactions Uses the energy in sunlight to break apart carbon dioxide molecules Occurs in the chloroplast, in the cells of the leaves Materials needed: Sunlight, carbon dioxide, water

  16. Step 2 of Photosynthesis • Called “Dark Reactions” (because it can take place in the dark) happens in cytoplasm • All the atoms are rearranged to form sugar, oxygen and water

  17. Step 2: Dark Reactions Rearranges the atoms to make the products Products made: Sugar (glucose), water and oxygen Summary of Photosynthesis How to Write a Chemical Equation Materials needed Products Sunlight + H2O + CO2 C6H12O6 + O2 + H2O

  18. The products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen. Oxygen Bubbles  Oxygen molecules not needed to build glucose are released into the air. This adds oxygen to the air we breathe.

  19. The photosynthesis equation is: +6CO2+6H2O C6H12O6+6O2 + carbon +waterglucose+oxygen dioxide Sunlight

  20. Step 2: Dark Reactions Rearranges the atoms to make the products Products made: Sugar, water and oxygen Summary of Photosynthesis How to Write a Chemical Equation Materials needed Products Sunlight + H2O + CO2 C6H12O6 + O2 + H2O

  21. In photosynthesis light energy is transformed into chemical energy in the form of glucose. Light Energy Photosynthesis Chemical Energy The glucose molecules formed during photosynthesis store the chemical energy that plants need to grow, bloom, and produce fruit.

  22. } Respiration the process plants use to release energy stored in glucose molecules

  23. Photosynthesis +6CO2+6H2O C6H12O6+6O2 + carbon +waterglucose+oxygen dioxide Sunlight NOTICE ANYTHING? Respiration E C6H12O6+6O2 6CO2+6H2O+ glucose+oxygen carbon +water + dioxide Energy

  24. • • • When oxygen combines with glucose it splits apart and energy is released water carbon dioxide – and what’s left is: carbon dioxide and water.

  25. Plants respire during the day and at night.

  26. The energy released when glucose breaks down into water and carbon dioxide is the energy plants use to grow and repair themselves.

  27. The atoms from these raw materials recombine to form a glucose molecule: 6 Carbon Dioxide 6 Water 1 glucose 6 oxygen The carbon atoms form a chain with hydrogen and oxygen atoms attached to it.
