  1. Physics 2 Review 15.5 and 16.1

  2. Properties of a Charged Conductor • Any net charge on a conductor is on the surface. • Surface charge is more closely arranged in a conductor where the surface if least flat, especially at sharp points. • The electric field inside a charged conductor always equals zero.

  3. Electric Potential Energy • Energy a charge has due to its position in an electric field - farther a + charge is from a – source charge the greater its EPE - closer a + charge is to a + source charge the greater its EPE

  4. Electric Potential Energy - requires work to move a charge to a position of greater EPE - when released the object will move to a lower EPE and its KE will increase

  5. Electric Potential • Electric potential energy per unit charge that a test charge would have if placed at that point V = EPE/q’ [V] = J/C = Volt, V Scalar quantity

  6. Potential Difference • Difference in electric potential between 2 points ΔV = Vf – Vo if electric field is uniform ΔV = Ed where E – electric field strength along the direction of motion d – distance between initial and final points along the field

  7. Sample Problem Two metal plates are attached to the two terminals of a 1.5 V battery. How much work is required to carry a +5 µC charge from the negative to the positive plate?

  8. Sample Problem Two charges A (+2 µC) and B (-3 µC) are 3 cm apart. What is the potential at a point midway between them?

  9. Sample Problem Three point charges A, B, and C (all 1 nC) are placed at the corners of an equilateral triangle of side 20 cm. Find the potential at a point midway between B and C.
