GEF SGP Madagascar • New GEF SGP country programme (2005) • ‘COMPACT’ landscape approach for South-West “Dry Forests” tentative list World Heritage site • Formation of ‘Local Consultative Body’ for mosaic of protected areas • Policy focus on support to Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) in government legislation

GEF SGP Comoros • New country programme (appraisal in September 2005) • Programme co-financed by UNDP CO • First round of grant-making in mid-2007 • Country Programme Strategy (CPS) includes follow up to GEF Medium Size project supporting the Parc Marin de Moheli • Coelocanth endangered species target for ecotourism

  5. Maldives GEF SGP application in OP4 • Maldives application to GEF SGP for entry during 4th Operational Phase (OP4) • Current participant in UNDP “South-South” programme, implemented on the ground by the GEF SGP • Exchange possibilities with GEF SGP Sri Lanka being explored

  6. OP4 target for SIDS • GEF Assembly in 2002 mandate for SGP to put priority on LDCs and SIDS • All Pacific SIDS currently included into SGP during OP3 • Pacific SIDS included according to a “sub-regional” approach using volunteer part-time “National Focal Persons”

OP4 target for SIDS (cont’d) • GEF SGP applications from remaining SIDS such as Cape Verde, Sao Tome etc. also under consideration • Increase exchange between Pacific SIDS, Caribbean and Indian Ocean • Consideration of Barbados experience in project approval given potential conflict of interests due to limited population size
