  4. The 101 is currently considered the tallest building in the world, if you don’t count the antenna. However, there is a building that is set to open later this year that will surpass the 101.

  5. Taipei Tower 101 • Built 1999-2004 • 1,667 feet tall (including antenna) • Contains offices, libraries, event areas, restaurants, shops, and a fitness center • 101 total floor=thus the name • 61 elevators • Cost=1.758 Billion US$

  7. 101’s Strengths • Designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. • Withstand 134 mph winds • Withstand a 7.0 Richter scale earthquake, only happens in a 2,500 year cycle. • Withstood a 6.8 earthquake during construction in which a crane fell off of the tower and killed 5 people.

  8. 101’s Foundation One of the most stable buildings ever constructed Reinforced by 380 piles driven 262 feet into the ground Each pile is 5 feet in diameter and can withstand a load of 1100-1450 tons, that is 2,900,000 pounds each. 262 feet down 262 feet down
