  7. New England Colonies • 3. New Hampshire John Wheelwright established 1st town, Exeter governed by the Exeter Compact, which was based on the Mayflower Compact

  9. New England Colonies • 4. Rhode Island • Roger Williams – run out of Massachusetts and set up RI to practice religion the way he wanted

  10. Middle Colonies • Religious freedom attracted many groups. • Hudson and Delaware rivers supported shipping and commerce. Rich soil and mild winters were favorable for farming and raising livestock

  11. New York and New Jersey

  12. Middle Colonies • 1. New York • Originally New Netherland and was founded by the Dutch, poor leadership and when Duke of York (England) attacked no one wanted to support the governor.

  13. Middle Colonies • 2. New Jersey • Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley – friends of the Duke of York he gave the land the start the colony of NJ, they attracted settlers by promising freedom of religion

  14. Pennsylvania and Delaware

  15. Middle Colonies • 3. Pennsylvania • William Penn – came from a wealthy family that was given a large land grant by the King. He joined the Quakers and established PA as a colony for the Quakers.

  16. Middle Colonies • 4. Delaware • Started out as a part of PA; William Penn granted that area their own assembly and they later founded the colony of DE

  17. Southern Colonies • soil and climate of this region were suitable for warm-weather crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo

  18. Jamestown

  19. Southern Colonies • 1. Virginia • Jamestown – 1607; first permanent English settlement in America

  20. Maryland, Carolina, and Georgia

  21. Southern Colonies • 2. Maryland • Lord Baltimore established MD for Roman Catholics fleeing persecution in England

  22. Southern Colonies • 3. Carolinas • A refuge for French protestants. • Spanish threatened to attack; owners refused to help. • So colonist overthrew the company and they became a royal colony. • Then divided into North Carolina and South Carolina.

  23. Southern Colonies • 4. Georgia • James Oglethorpe founded GA as a refuge for debtors.
