COOK ISLANDS LOCATION & STATISTICS The Cook Islands is a group of 15 islands (3 uninhabited) in the South-West Pacific, west of Tahiti Area: 240 sq km land 1.8 million sq km ocean Pop: 12,000 on 12 islands Density: 75 per sq km Capital: Rarotonga Main Town: Avarua Official Languages: Cook Is Maori & English

  5. I come from the high, volcanic island of Rarotonga, which is the capital. Three-quarters of the country’s populaqtion (9,000) live on this island. Rarotonga Island

  8. CREATE TRANSNATIONAL WORLD HERITAGE SITE AT SUWARROW Suwarrow atoll is an important bird breeding site which is uninhabited. We are petitioning our government to make it into a World Heritage Site together with the Line Islands to the north.

  9. NEED FOR COASTAL REAFFORESTATIONAFTER CYCLONES OF FEBRUARY 2005 This area is an historic area where the traditional chief has agreed to my request for our youth to replant the area with native trees with strong root systems, such as the sea almond which we call “kauariki”.

  10. UNESCO VOICES OF THE WORLD PROJECT We would like to participate in a project that will asssist us with preservation of language and culture, in association with our Ministry of Culture. We have responded to an email call from UNESCO Voices of the World project, but maybe LINKS may also provide an opportunity.

  11. FOLLOW UP INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LEGISLATION Our Ministry of Culture has shown us a proposed draft bill for protection of Intellectual Property Rights. We would like to work in partnership with the Ministry to ensure it is explained and passed.

  12. SYNERGIES BETWEEN U.N. CONVENTIONS • We would like to follow up the link between Sustainable Development and: • Climate Change (UNFCCC), especially with regard to renewable • energy sources and reducing greenhouse gases • Persisent Organic Pollutants (Stockholm Convention), especially with regard to best available technology and best environment practice in the context of waste management Rarotonga Fitchia (Pua neinei)
