  2. Warmup Date: Monday, February 3, 2014 Objective: Students will be able to describe how Washington’s Presidency was an example to other leaders and how the US handled Revolutionary war debt. Question: What do you know about George Washington?

  3. Question of the Week In what ways did Washington’s Presidency influence the future U.S. Political System?

  4. Activity #1 Question: What examples did Washington set that others would follow. Directions: Read the text titled “Washington Sets Some Firsts” and complete the chart.

  5. Activity #2 Question: What were the sides of the debate over paying the national debt? Directions (Part I): Read the first paragraph of the text, “A New Nation Conceived in Debt.” Highlight the problems that the young United States faced. List them. Direction (Part II): Students with a #1 will highlight Hamilton’s plan. Students with a #2 will highlight the Southern reaction. Then, you will have a silent debate with your table partner. Reflect: Why was the location of the nation’s capital a compromise?

  6. Activity #3 Question: Why did the political parties emerge and what did each stand for? Directions (Part I): Write down any words that come to mind when you hear the words “Polical Party” Directions (Part II)- Watch the video called, “The First Political Parties.” Draw an image that reflects each party’s beliefs. Reflect- Washington did not join a political party. He felt that the people should base their decisions on the needs of a country as a whole. Do you agree or disagree?

  7. Activity #4 Question: What recommendations did Washington make once he left office? Why did he make these recommendations Directions- With a partner, read the excerpts of Washington’s “Farewell Address.” Then, respond to the guiding questions. Reflection: Which ideas do you agree with? Which ideas do you disagree with?
