  1. Sermon • Money Matters • Part 1 • Matt 6:24; 1 Tim 6:6-10 • Introduction

  2. We live in a “Both/And” kind of world.

  3. Matthew 6:24 – “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (ESV)

  4. YOU CAN’T SERVE TWO MASTERS • You cannot serve God and money. • Serving money is rooted in The combination of love of self, love of created things, and love of money, and it becomes a serious spiritual threat to our souls.

  5. Money has a unique power in our lives. • Jesus knows that of all the false masters he could warn us about, money is the most seductive and deceptive.

  6. “Money matters because it interacts with one of the most significant issues in my heart: the selfishness of sin.” • Paul Tripp

  7. “Money matters, but God’s grace matters even more!” • Paul Tripp

  8. …And He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” Luke 12:15

  9. “What the Bible clearly teaches is that when life-shaping love for money squeezes out of your heart the life-shaping love for God that was designed to be the organizing principle of your life, then you are a person in deep spiritual trouble.

  10. Money is not evil, but it makes a very, very, bad god.” Paul Tripp

  11. But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

  12. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

  13. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. (1 Timothy 6:6-10 ESV)

  14. Love of money is… • a contentment problem • related to a desire problem (worship)

  15. Love of money is… • an issue which leads to AVOIDABLE temptation • an issue which finally leads to self-destructive behavior

  16. How do we know if we are captured by a LOVE of MONEY?

  17. It is the organizing value of your life. • It makes you think that God loves you. • It makes you feel that you are better than others. • It makes you feel like you are smarter than others.

  18. It will rearrange your schedule and how you prioritize your time. • It will reshape your relationships • -It will fill your heart with joy when you have it, yet you’ll quickly become convinced that you don’t have enough.

  19. You will sin to obtain more wealth. • It becomes the focus of your identity. • You will tend to flaunt your money and be unduly eager to show off your things.

  20. It is having our hearts captured by His love for us that melts and transforms our lives. • “The cross is the blazing fire at which the flame of our love is kindled, but we have to get near enough for its sparks to fall on us.“ • John Stott

  21. Our biggest problem isn’t that we over value money or things, but that we UNDER VALUE Jesus.
