  2. What is it? Multimedia comes in many different formats. It can be almost anything you can hear or see like text, pictures, music, sound, videos, records, films, animations, and more. On the Internet you can often find multimedia elements embedded in web pages, and modern web browsers have support for a number of multimedia formats. Source: www.w3schools.com

  3. Multimedia and its Types Multimedia is available in different types and formats. Different types of Multimedia have unique extensions, with which they are identified Multimedia can be categorized under two major headings- Linear and Non- linear. Linear multimedia does not require user control or navigation (e.g. Video playback) Non-linear multimedia engages the user in interaction (e.g. Video gaming) Source: www.wikipedia.org

  4. Common forms of Multimedia • Multimedia we come across in our daily IT lives are: • Text • Images • Audio • Video/ Animation

  5. Text Text is probably the most common form of multimedia that computer users come across. Text is generated by using various word processing software. Since these software are many in number, therefore text is also available in different formats. The most common ones are: .txt: This is the most basic way of representing text. The software ‘Notepad’ usually saves text in this format. Functionality is limited to only typing and editing text. .doc/.docx: Indicates the use of the highly popular Microsoft Word as the word processor. Text can be edited, displayed in different colours, fonts, sizes, styles etc. Pictures or graphs may also be generated. .pdf: Such files are run using Adobe Reader. Only the Professional version allows editing. This type is generally used when the users wants to create a read- only file. Large text often stored in this format. PDF files have advanced security features and can include images and graphs, but cannot generate them on their own.

XPS does not attempt to capture the full structured richness of an Office document. As an electronic paper format, it is all about high fidelity representation of the output only. .rtf: The Rich Text Format was developed by Microsoft first in 1987 for Microsoft products and cross- platform document interchange. It is a standard way to encode various text formatting properties, such as bold characters and typefaces, as well document formatting and structures. .xml: Extensible Markup Language is one that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human- readable and machine- readable. Images Images are used for various purposes and their quality and properties differ accordingly. .png: This format is an image of very high quality, used for purposes like graphic deigning .jpeg: Developed by the Joint Picture Experts Group, it is very common and is associated with good quality images. .bmp: Is an image of high quality, but usually not used on the web .gif: Is a low- quality image, usually something like a drawing or simple graphics

It is capable of representing bitmaps ranging from black to white, indexed colour and RGB colour. Thr format also supports various compression methods. .sct: The Scitex format finds application in printing of large and very large- format printing on both paper and speciality materials

  9. Audio • MPEG Layer-3 (.mp3): Arguably the most common audio format. Developed by Motion Pictures Expert Group • Wave(.wav): Developed by • IBM and Microsoft. Works on all • Windows computers and all • browsers except Google’s ‘Chrome’. Any form of audible media (sound).   10. Windows Media Audio (.wma): High quality sound, but incompatible with Apple’s iPod. This format is useful for online streaming. Musical Instrument Digital Interface (.mid/.midi): This format does not contain sound, but only contains digital notes that can be played by electronics like a computer sound- card. Real Audio (.rm/.ram): Utilised for online streaming, but quality could be low. Developed by Real Media, specially for the internet, and can stream at low bandwidths. Source: www.w3schools.com

  11. Video/ Animation • Audio Video Interleave (.avi): Developed by Microsoft, works on all Windows machines and most popular web browsers. May face problems on non- Windows computers. • Windows Media Video (.wmv): • Another Microsoft product, but limited to • only Windows machines. Other Operating Systems may be able to support, but special software will have to be installed first. • Motion Pictures Experts Group (.mpeg): • On the web, this is arguably the most common format and its works across multiple platforms. • QuickTime (.mov): An Apple development, meant for compatibility with its Macintosh OS and iOS devices like iPods or iPads. Videos or Animation are the most powerful type of multimedia, as they can ideas and information like no other form of multimedia.   12. RealVideo (.rm/.ram): Developed by Real Media, it finds application mostly on the web for streaming purposes, as it works even at low bandwidths. Flash (.flv/.swf): When it comes to animation, this Macromedia format is most likely to be in use.It is now supported by Adobe’s Shockwave Player and is common on the internet. MPEG Layer- 4 (.mp4): This format utilises H.264 video compression technology, and alongside Flash Video, is the most popular format online. The compression technology ensures high quality, yet small- sized video clips, leading to its popularity, be it online on video- sharing websites like YouTube or its utilisation for limited memory gadgets like iPods. Advanced codec based on this format has led to formats of highest quality High Definition videos.
