  3. Zygmunt III Waza He lived from 1566 to 1632. Polish king since 1587 and the king of Switzerland from 1592 to 1599. He was brought up by jezuits. He favoured catholics. Menu

  5. Polish culture • In 17th century – baroque was a dominant style inarchitecture and painting. • There was a developed noble culture. They thought that they were the most important people in Polish Republic, as well as they thought that the country is in danger only because of monarchs who wanted to limit their rights • Moreover, in Poland first newspapers appeared and poetry developed.   6. EDUCATION Education in 17th century was overcome by Jezuits. They taught only nobilities’ children and they taught only two subjects: Latin and rhetoric. That was a limited range of education. Menu

  7. About wars. 17th century was very hard for Poland. Sweden, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine attacked Poland. One of the main wars that Poland led was with Sweden. The war started in 1655 and it is called Swedish Deluge (in Polish: Potop Szwedzki).Zygmunt III Waza wanted to take over the power in Sweden. They managed to take over the power. Swedish government did not agree to accept the Polish king. The war started. The main battles were: Kirholm, defense of Jasna Gora. At the begginig Polish army lost the battles, but after their victory inJasna Gora, they started to win in many other battles. Next.

  9. Defense of Jasna Gora During Swedish Deluge, Swedish army attacked monastery in Czestochowa. Monks decided to fight against them. The leader of monks was AugustynKordecki. The battle started in November 1655, and finished in December 1655. The siege lasted 39 days. The Monks won the small war and stopped the Swedish Deluge. That victory over one of our greater enemies made Poles believe in their strength and skills. More about wars.

  10. Hit-and-run War Stefan Czarnecki was responsible for starting that type of war. This war was very specific. Polish armyattacked Swedish forces, which were very slow. This tactics was very effective. The Swedish were confused. Zolkiewski was the greatest leader ofPolish army at that time. More about wars.

  11. War with The Turkish. In 1620 the Turkish burned Varna. The first battle started in Cecora.Polish army lost out this battle. The leader of the Polish Army was killed.His name was Stefan Zolkiewski.One year later Polish army rushed to Moldova. In order to help defend the citadel in Chocim. They were beaten again. Poles lost out again and they signed the truce in Buczacz. Poland lost Ukraine, Podole and they had topay the tribute. More aboutit.

  12. More about „War with The Turkish”. The Polish goverment did not agree to accept the conditions which were given in the truce.. In 1673 a new leader of Polish army, Jan Sobieski, countered Chocim. Sobieski was the largest Turkish-tamer. But it was not the end. In 1683 in Vienna Sobieski wonwith the Turkish army again. This victory crushed the Turkish army and they had to sign the truce in Karlowice in 1699. After the battle of Vienna,Jan Sobieski became a new king of Poland.
