  3. WHY DO FRESHMEN STRUGGLE? Peer Pressure Lack of social skills Varied cognitive development Poor self image Too many options Unfamiliar w/schedule Poor organizational skills Intimidated by older students Not feeling connected Poor impulse control Needs & interests not identified Uncertain about the future Poor communication skills Lack of friends Unprepared for HS expectations Falling through the cracks

  4. Goal One Provide opportunities, within a structured setting, for all students to enhance and apply organizational skills, time management skills, and overall study skills, while reinforcing appropriate interpersonal and social skills

  5. Goal Two Create a safe and secure learning environment within which the individual needs of every student are met

  6. Goal Three Every student will actively participate, along with all stakeholders, in a comprehensive and multi-facet orientation to the high school experience. This will include the creation of a long-term academic pathway to prepare him or her for the future

  7. Goal Four Enhance the awareness, within all staff members, of the diverse needs of 9th grade students, while providing each student the opportunity to build a positive relationship with a caring adult within the building

TRANSITION/ORIENTATION • Extensive guidance involvement during 8th grade and at every level  • Variety of grade level appropriate activities • Parent involvement  • Begins in 8th grade, continues into the summer, carried out during 9th grade  • Provides opportunities for students to give feedback while allowing them to communicate interests and address concerns • Club/activity fair 

  11. The Intensive Block Model • The 4 X 4 semesterized block allows students to take 4 courses per semester. • Students attend 4 eighty-minute classes each day.

  14. Allows teachers to fully develop key concepts Students have a greater range of courses from which to select Students prepare for only four classes at a time Allows more creativity on the part of the teacher and fosters more creativity in the students

A variety of learning styles can be addressed in each classroom enabling more learners to be successful • A wider variety of learning activities are possible • Greater opportunities for the application of newly acquired concepts • Create opportunities for special activities during the day without losing full instructional periods

  17. Credit and Subjects Required for Graduation: 145 Credits are required for graduation including 5 credits each year of the following: • Language Arts (Literacy) • Mathematics • Science • Physical Education, Health and Safety

Additionally, the Following Subjects are required for Graduation: • United States History I and II • World Cultures or World History • 5 Credits of Social Science Elective • 10 Credits in World Language • Information Technology I • 5 Credits in Visual and Performing Arts • 5 Credits in Career Education, Consumer, Family and Life Skills, or Vocational-Technical Education

  20. Additional Opportunities to Earn College Credits 1. College Acceleration Program (CAP) through BCC  Offers students the opportunity to earn college credits for courses taught at BTHS  Courses can be taught by BTHS or BCC staff 2. Internet based classes

  21. THE SCHEDULING PROCESS FAQ’S • When will scheduling occur? Students at Springside – Beginning early February Parents of private school students should contact the High School Counseling Office to make a scheduling appointment (609) 387-1713, Ext. 1104 • Where will scheduling occur? Springside students will be scheduled at the Middle School Private School students will be scheduled at the High School

  22. THE SCHEDULING PROCESS • How is the schedule determined? Classroom performance Teacher recommendations Standardized test results Parental and student feedback • How will I know when my child has been scheduled? Each student will be asked to bring home a completed class schedule form to be signed by parent/guardian

  23. THE SCHEDULING PROCESS • Once my child’s signed scheduled form has been returned can changes still be made in their schedule? Changes in a student’s schedule can be made at any time up until August 1st!!

  27. ADADEMICS Eligible for Semester One Completed 30 Credits and attained a GPA of 2.0 (74) or higher from the previous year (does not apply to incoming 8th grade students.) Eligible for Semester Two Completed 15 Credits and attained a GPA of 2.0 (74) or higher from semester one

  28. ATHLETICS – AGE QUALIFICATIONS 16 Years old before September 1st of the Freshman year – student will not play Freshman athletics 19 Years old before September 1st of the Senior Year – student will not participate in athletics

  29. ATHLETICS – OTHER QUALIFICATIONS • Physical from your family physician • Signed Permission slip • NJSIAA Steroid Testing Form • Abide by the signed athletic contract • Abide by team rules • Not on the deprived list

Senior Trip Information • You can earn money towards your son/daughter’s Senior Class Trip by purchasing Food Gift Certificates from the Athletic Office • You may purchase Food Gift Certificates for Shoprite, Pathmark, or ACME • You earn $4.00 for every $100.00 you purchase. • Order online: Go to the Athletics Web Site to order your certificates
