  1. STUDY GUIDE - FOR TEST TOMORROW!!! Viruses are not considered living organisms because they can not reproduce by themselves. They must be in a lost cell and use the molecules of the host in order to reproduce. Viruses consist of an inner core of DNA (nucleic acid) and an outer coat (capsid) of protein. The virus attached its capsid to the surface of a host cell and then injects its DNA into the host cell. There, the DNA will insert into the host cell chromosome. The host cell will then start copying the viral DNA, and using that information to make new viruses. The host cell will keep making viruses until there are so many that it bursts.

  2. Antibiotics are only effective against living organisms. They are of effective against viruses! Body's Natural Defenses: 1st line of defense: skin, mucus, tears, saliva 2nd line of defense: non-specific inflammation (fever, swelling, soreness) WHITE BLOOD CELLS! Vaccine: the injection of a weakened or mild form of a pathogen to produce immunity. What does this mean???? What is a pathogen? Active vs Passive??? Allergies: Over reaction of the immune system to a foreign antigens. Bacteria: 3 shapes: cocci, rods, spirilli We can classify bacteria by their shape, and how they get energy! Autotrophs - make their own food. Heterotrophs - get energy by taking in food Decomposers - break down dead matter
