  1. Speed and Velocity James Martin Middle School Mrs. Anna Ward

  2. DO NOW!!!! • In the formula: S = D/T, what does the: • S stand for? D stand for? T stand for? • Calculate the answers using the formula S = D/T: • A bicyclist travels 60.0 kilometers in 3.5 hours. What is the cyclist’s average speed? • How much time would it take for the sound of thunder to travel 1,500 meters if sound travels at a speed of 330 m/sec? • A comet is cruising through the solar system at a speed of 50,000 kilometers per hour for 4 hours time.

  3. Announcements • The Quiz scheduled for tomorrow has been moved to Friday

  4. Agenda • Average Speed vs. Instantaneous Speed • Speed vs. Velocity • Choral Response: Speed and Velocity • Speed practice problems • Racecar lab on Speed

  5. Average Speed Instantaneous Speed • Average Speed is the total distance divided by the total time, the average of all the speeds during a given time • Think about it….if you drive to school from your house, do you travel at the same time for the entire trip? • However, in science class we will use the average speed for our calculations • Your moment-to-moment speed • The speed at any given moment • What the “SPEED LIMIT” is based off of

  6. What is velocity? • Velocity is speed with direction

  7. Speed versus Velocity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRb5PSxJerM

  8. Speed vs. Velocity—Choral Response • Speed is distance over time; Velocity adds in direction

  9. CFUs: • What is speed + direction? • Ms. Lusk’s room is 20 meters from my room. Duante went to take a textbook to her room and it took 20 seconds to get there. What was his speed? • The baseball field is 300 meters away. Alfie is really late to practice, so it only took 60 seconds to get to tothe field. What was his speed? • What is the formula for speed? • What is the formula for velocity? • Ramiro took his dog for a walk around the block. It took him 5 minutes to travel 1 km.

  10. More CFUs: • Kaleeha walks at a rate of 1.5 m/s. She needs to go from Mrs. Ward’s room to the office to pick up a form. It takes her 240 seconds to get to the office and back. How far did she walk? • How far is the office from Mrs. Ward’s room? • Dianelys runs during soccer practice for every day after school. She runs the length of the field many times at every practice. If Ms. Bickett times Dianelys running at a rate of 2.5 m/s for 400 meters, how long does she run? • What is the name for the location of a place or thing? • What is another name for change in position?

  11. Race Car Lab • We are using the same tape marks as Monday (2 m) • Students with stopwatches will be team captains • Please use your quiet partner voices and remember to exceed expectations

  12. EXIT TICKET • Mr. Rudolph lives 16 km from James Martin Middle School. If he drives at an average speed of 2 km/minute, how long will it take him to get home? • Mrs. CVT has a meeting at the CMS Central Secondary Office. If it takes her 20 minutes to get there and she drives at an average rate of 1 km/minute, how far is the office?
