What is the National Register? • The official list of the Nation’s cultural resources worthy of preservation • Part of the national effort to identify, evaluate, and protect important historic resources.  • Federal program administered by the National Park Service in partnership with each state’s Office of Historic Preservation • Established in 1966 with passage of the National Historic Preservation Act

  10. Can a property be listed if an owner’s objects?

  12. Does the nomination process stop if the owner objects?

  13. National Register nominations can be heard by the State Historical Resources Commission even if a private owner objects to the listing. It is possible for these properties to receive a determination of eligibility by the Keeper of the National Register in Washington, D.C.

  14. What is a Historic District? A significant concentration, linkage, or continuity of sites, buildings, structures, or objects united historically or aesthetically by plan or physical development.

Benefits • Fosters pride of place and appreciation of cultural heritage • Maintains and enhances property values • Establishes eligibility for federal funding and tax incentives • Provides economic and other incentives to promote conservation and preservation • Sustains or improves quality of life by maintaining neighborhood character

  20. Common Misconceptions • Federal or state government assumes property rights in your building • Property value will go down. • You must open your property to the public.  • Large sums of money are available to assist owners and local agencies in rehabilitating National Register properties.
