  1. “The Gift of the Magi” Pre-Reading Anticipation Guide

  2. Directions • Number your paper from 1-6. • As you view/hear each statement, decide whether you agree or disagree with it. • Try not to think too hard! On your paper, write your response next to the item number (“agree” or “disagree”). This will introduce you to some of the themes of the novel.

  3. Agree or Disagree? 1. True generosity is inspired by love.

  4. Agree or Disagree? 2. It is possible to be both rich in one way and poor in another way.

  5. Agree or Disagree? 3. A good way to show someone how much you care about them is to buy them an expensive gift.

  6. Agree or Disagree? 4. The real reason we give gifts to others is to make ourselves look good (or rich, or generous, etc).

  7. Agree or Disagree? 5. Love (any kind of love) is just as valuable as material things.

  8. Agree or Disagree? 6. The best gift is not the most expensive one, but the most thoughtful one.

  9. QUICKWRITE Keep going! Write more of your thoughts on some of the things we just talked about: thoughtfulness, love/friendship, giving gifts, showing love, etc. Write approximately one paragraph. Write on your notes page from today or on notebook paper.
