  1. Our Lady of the Rosary College2006-2007 S.2 Computer Literacy Lesson 9 Central Processing Unit Mr. Ku Heung Chin

  2. Central Processing Unit (CPU) • The “brain” of the computer • Accepts and executes instructions. • Control various devices in the computer system.

  3. 3 basic units in CPU • Control Unit • Control all operations. • Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) • Addition, subtraction, decision-making…. • Register • Hold temporary data.

  4. Instruction Cycle • 1.Fetching • 2.Decoding • 3.Executing 1 2 3 3

  5. Clock Rate • How many instructions can a CPU runs per second • Unit: cycles per second Hertz (Hz) • E.g. 2.4 GHz • 2.4*1000*1000*1000 =2400000000 instructions per second.

  6. Intel and AMD • Two major companies producing CPUs • Intel Corporation vs Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

  7. Intel vs AMD • 1976 • Intel 8086/8088 :5MHz • 1982 • AMD became a licensed second-source manufacturer of 8086 and 8088 • Intel 80286 : 6-25 MHz

  8. Intel vs AMD • 1986 • Intel: 80386: 16-40 MHz • 1990 • Intel : 80486 : 40-100 MHz • 1991 • AMD: Am386: 33-40 MHz • 1993 • AMD: AM486:40-120MHz

  9. Intel vs AMD • 1993 • Intel: Pentium:60-300MHz • 1995 • AMD: K5 :75-133MHz • 1997 • Intel Pentium II:233-450MHz • AMD: K6:200-300MHz

  10. Intel vs AMD • 1999 • Intel : Pentium III: 450MHz-1.4GHz • AMD: Duron and Athlon(K7): 500MHz – 2GHz

  11. Intel vs AMD • 2001 • Intel : Pentium 4: 1.3GHz-3.8GHz • 2003 • AMD:Athlon64 2.0GHz – 2.4GHz

  12. Intel vs AMD • 2006 ( Dual Core CPU) • Intel: Core 2 (Duo/Quad /Extreme) • AMD: Athlon64 X2

  13. Intel vs AMD • Who wins?? • 2006 second quarter market share: • Intel 73 % • AMD 22% • Others 5%

  14. Reminders • HW7 • Due next cycle • Download from E-Classroom or Mr. Ku’s homepage • Quiz (Unit 3 and 4) • Cycle 17 (Starting from 2/3/2007)
