  1. Social Studies Skills Tutor An excellent guide to opening the mind!

  2. The skills Tutor can be found at: • http://www.phschool.com/curriculum_support/ss_skills_tutor/content/pop.html • At this point I would go into the tutor and show some of it’s great aspects and activities that it has for students.

  3. What is it good for? • There are no specific outcomes that I could think to go along with the Social Studies Skills Tutor, but I am sure some general outcomes could be made to fit. • What the Social Studies Skills Tutor is good for is teaching social studies “skills” which almost all social studies curriculums mention, and advise you use in your classroom, but they are never made a specific outcome. • The Law 120 curriculum document actually has a list of social studies skills that, I think, all students should be practicing in all their classrooms, and that is why I like this Tutor activity.

  4. Some Social Studies skills which the Social Studies Skills Tutor covers. • Read critically • detect bias in historical accounts • distinguish fact from fiction • detect cause and effect relationships • detect bias in visual material

  5. Express and support a point of view • form opinion based on critical examination of relevant material • restate major ideas of a complex topic in concise form • Solve problems creatively and critically • identify a situation in which a decision is required • secure needed factual information relevant to making the decision • recognize the values implicit in the situation and the issues that flow from them • identify alternative courses of action and predict likely consequences of each • make decision based on data obtained; select an appropriate strategy to solve a problem

  6. Gather, record, evaluate, and synthesize information • interpret history through artefacts • use sources of information in the community • use map and globe reading skills • interpret pictures, charts, graphs, photographs, tables and other visuals • distinguish between primary and secondary sources • identify the limitations of primary and secondary sources • detect bias in primary and secondary sources

  7. And many many more!!
