  1. Updating Work in Hughes Collection 15 Nov 2010 Vicki Sipe

  2. Agenda Where we are with Hughes Addition to UMBC Photography Genres Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record Group of similar images Zooming into image without crashing Search full database for similar records Exercises Best Practices

  3. Where we are with Hughes 2812 images, some duplicates, there are a few more to be added by Special Collections 400 completed as of Nov 2010 Refocus efforts Commit to 2 hours per person each week on Hughes work Documents currently posted to Wiki Beginning in CONTENTdm Hughes Data Dictionary UMBC Photography Genres with Definitions To be posted Hughes Collections Scope of Work Hughes Best Practices Searching OCLC Authorities for Hughes Searching TGM for Hughes Links to Visual Resources Cataloging tools from BMS Dept webpage http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/bms/catvisual.php

  4. Addition to UMBC Photography Genres • Advertising photography [not AAT] • Note:Photography that presents or calls attention to a product, service, event, or idea for purposes of advertising. Exercise: Which of these 4 images would be Advertising photography? P75-54-0057g P75-54-0295g P75-54-1489g P75-54-0000g

  5. Addition to UMBC Photography Genres All four of these could use the TGM heading Advertising, but only one really fits the Genre of Advertising photography? Photo of an advertisement. P75-54-0057g Photo including an advertisement. P75-54-0295g P75-54-0000g But this one is a photo taken for an advertisement. It calls attention to the product, in several ways. So this photo falls into the Genre of Advertising photography. Photo including billboards . P75-54-1489g

  6. Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record Field added to the Hughes record template, see Data Dictionary Mappable Where image is of building exterior and a specific street address or street intersection is identified, record “yes” in this field. Also use for parks, statues, etc. where a specific street location is identifiable. Based on information in the Caption field, consider this image to be Mappable and enter “yes” in the field. P75-54-0060g

  7. Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record -- Mappable field Based on information in the Caption field, consider this image to be Mappable and enter “yes” in the field. P75-54-0229g

  8. Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record -- Mappable field An image might contain information on location that doesn’t appear in the Caption field. P75-54-1650g Zoom in. The street signs tell you that the building was at the corner of W. Lombard St. and S. Liberty St. This street light appears to have street signs attached to it. Consider this image to be Mappable and enter “yes” in the Mappable field. Add “Corner of W. Lombard St. and S Liberty St.” in the Description field.

  9. Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record -- Mappable field With a City Directory, you might be able figure out where this building was located. But based on information in the record and the image, this is NOT mappable. Enter nothing in the Mappable field. P75-54-A240g

  10. Future project, to map the Mappable images Project at Drake University. The details page is the CONTENTdm record. We could do something similar with our Hughes images. http://www.lib.drake.edu/heritage/odm/map/index.html

  11. Additions/Changes to the CONTENTdm record -- Title field Title field Now contains the Accession number Allows for sorting by Accession number when assigning images. Makes it easier to gather groups of images of same thing. Remember to supply square brackets when creating a title

  12. Group of similar images Look at all the images before beginning to work on a record. Gather all possible information, then use all information in each of the records. We are looking at the Armory, but what is a “Convention Int.” P75-54-A89g The caption from this similar image, tells us that the Armory is set up for the Democratic Convention. P75-54-A89g The 1912 Democratic National Convention took place in Baltimore at the 5th Maryland Regiment Armory. Add this information to the Description field of both records. Make the Date Created c.1912. Use c. 1912 because we are making some assumptions.

  13. Zooming into image without crashing The Viewer within Project Client is prone to crashing. An alternative method of zooming: Copy the Accession number Click on the Find in Collection tab Paste the Accession number into the search box Click on the Search button This will bring up the record

  14. Zooming into image without crashing The record comes up in a preview window Double click on the image This opens a browser window with the image and record in the CONTENTdm public interface.

  15. Zooming into image without crashing Use the tools at the top of the pane to zoom and move around the image. Zoom in Zoom out Percentage of full image Pan left Pan right Pan up Pan down

  16. Zooming into image without crashing Also move around the image using the small image to the right. Whatever appears inside the red box, appears in the zoom to the left. Place cursor inside red box Left-click and drag red box around the image Release the mouse button when you have the box were you want it. The larger image to the left will change to what is now in the red box.

  17. Search full database for similar records If you think there might be a completed record in the collection for an image similar to one you are working on, you can use information from the completed record to save time. This new image is of the outlet gatehouse at Lake Montebello P75-54-A89g

  18. Search full database for similar records Go to the Find in Collection tab. Enter a search term related to your image into the search box. For example, montebello from the Caption of the gatehouse picture. Hit the Search button

  19. Search full database for similar records The keyword search on “montebello” retrieves several completed records from the Collection. Double click on one of the images This one for example Completed records will have a title in the title field instead of a number or [Title].

  20. Search full database for similar records This opens a browser window with the image and record in the CONTENTdm public interface. This is the pumping station at Lake Montebello

  21. Search full database for similar records Completed record in web browser Some of the information on this record might also work for your new record. Check the following fields: Genre Location Subject Names Subject (TGM) And see if the same headings fit your new image.

  22. Search full database for similar records New image in Project Client Information from completed record The Genre, Location, and Subject Names from the completed record all fit the new image, so use them in your new record. P75-54-A89g Do all of the Subject (TGM) field headings fit the new image? The old image is a pumping station. The new image is the outlet gate house. The Pumping stations heading does not really fit the new image, so do not use it. The outlet gate house is part of the Lake Montebello water department facility, so both the Water supply and Waterworks headings fit well.

  23. Search full database for similar records New image in Project Client Information from completed record P75-54-A89g Reusing information from completed records to create new records can save you time.

  24. Exercise Work on one of the images in your set.

  25. Discussion of Exercise examples • Portraits---group and individual portraits P75-54-N763g P75-54-N669g

  26. Discussion of Exercise examples 2) Title on piece This caption is written on the image Treat it as a title. The date should be used in the Date Created field. Change the Title Note to “Title from item.” P75-54-N671g

  27. Discussion of Exercise examples 2) Title on piece P75-54-N701g You can use a portion of the caption as the title. Begin at the beginning. Record unused portion in Description field if the information does not appear in the Caption field. Change the Title Note.

  28. Discussion of Exercise examples 3) Shop windows and storefronts Window displays Scope Note: For images that focus on window dressings and displays. The shot is close in and focuses on the window. Also look for a TGM term for the product displayed in the window or the type of store. Here we have lots of Tobacco products. P75-54-N758g

  29. Discussion of Exercise examples 3) Shop windows and storefronts P75-54-N759g Storefronts—Focus is more on building front than on the windows. Not so close a shot. Automobile dealerships covers the type of store. Also look for the company name or business name in OCLC Authority file.

  30. Discussion of Exercise examples 3) Shop windows and storefronts Stores & shops—Focus is on a group of stores. A street of shops. Cityscapes is both a Genre and a TGM term. P75-54-0977g Add as a Subject Name the business names you can see on building fronts and in shop windows. There are many in this case and the display has been abbreviated.
