  6. “Be Holy As I Am Holy” The Meaning of Holiness and How to Walk It Out

  7. The Call to be Holy As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." (1 Kepha 1:14-16)

  8. Where is it written: “Be Holy For I Am Holy”? Leviticus 11:44-45 Leviticus 19:2 Leviticus 20:7 Leviticus 20:26 Leviticus 11-22 is therefore called “the Holiness Code”

  9. Dictionary.com • –adjective • specially recognized as or declared sacred by religious use or authority; consecrated: holy ground. • dedicated or devoted to the service of God, the church, or religion: a holy man. • saintly; godly; pious; devout: a holy life.

  10. having a spiritually pure quality: a holy love. • entitled to worship or veneration as or as if sacred: a holy relic. • religious: holy rites. • inspiring fear, awe, or grave distress: The director, when angry, is a holy terror.

  11. A Little Abstract? Nebulous? Intangible? Sacred and consecrated are more of those abstract, vague terms that still leave us all hazy, uncertain and without a clear grasp of the meaning of holy.  Telling us that its related to "religious use or authority" really doesn't help much either.  We already know that holy is related to our religious walk of faith.  But what exactly does it mean?

  12. Did You Know… That the Meaning of “Holy” and “Holiness” Does Not Have to Be a Mystery. These terms are Abstract and Fuzzy. But We Can Have a Clear Understanding of Its Meaning We Do Not Have to Guess About How to Live a Holy Life Living a Holy Life Can Be Easy to Understand and Attainable.

  13. Brown, Driver, Briggs Lexicon (BDB) Our word comes from the Hebrew root vdq(pronounced kădăsh), which comes from the "poss. orig. idea of separation, withdrawal."

  14. BDB goes on to further describe our word: • vd;Q' ((qadash) vb. denom. be set apart, consecrated, separated • vd,qo(qodesh) n. m. apartness, sacredness, one who is separated • vAdq' (qadosh) adj. sacred, holy; separate from human infirmity, impurity, and sin

  15. The Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament (TWOT) says vd,qo (qodesh) apartness, holiness, sacredness.

  16. TWOT The meaning "to separate" is favored by many scholars, but the fact that qdsh rarely, if ever, occurs in a secular sense makes any positive conclusion in this regard difficult because of the limited evidence on which to base philological comparison.

  17. TWOT In the Qal the verb qadashis used most frequently to describe the state of consecrationeffected by Levitical ritual. In Exo 29:21, 37; Exo 30:29 certain articles used in the Levitical service were consecrated to God and were thus recognized as belonging to the realm of the sacred.

  18. Dictionary.com consecrate means "to make or declare sacred; set apart or dedicate to the service of a deity" or "to devote or dedicate to some purpose."

  19. TWOT - Transmission of the state of holiness to anything that touched a person or object so consecrated (Exo 29:37; Exo 30:29; Lev 6:18 [H 11], 27 [H 20]) does not necessarily imply that a transferable divine energy exists in the "holy." Rather, it seems that the person or object entered the state of holiness in the sense of becoming subject to cultic restrictions, as were other holy persons or objects, in order to avoid diffusion of the sacred and the profane....

  20. So, then, Holy means… The noun holy should be understood as "something which is separate or set-apart (devoted) for a specific purpose."  The verb to make holy or to be holy means the act of “separating something for a particular purpose," The adjective holydescribes something that has been set apart or separated for a particular purpose.

  21. Principle of First Use Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.  By the seventh day Elohim had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.  And Elohim blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Bereshith[Genesis] 2:1-3)

  22. The Separations of Creation (Hebbdl – divide, separate, distinguish) *Day 1- Light from Darkness (v4) *Day 2 – Waters Above from Below (v6-7) Day 3 – Land from Gathered Water *Day 4 – Day from Night (v14,18) (Day 6? – Woman from Man) Day 7 – Sabbath Day from the other Six

  23. How to Keep the Sabbath Holy Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy (set it apart). For six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yehovah your Elohim; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or your resident foreigner who is in your gates. (Ex 20:8-10)

  24. Guard the day of the Sabbath to set it apart just as Yehovahyour Elohim has commanded you.  You are to serve and do all your work in six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of Yehovahyour Elohim. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male servant, your female servant, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest.(Deut 5:12-14)

  25. Did You Know… That When You Guard the Sabbath Day to Set It Apart, Yehovah is Setting You Apart from the World and All Pretenders? In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as Yehovah is Holy

  26. Setting Apart the Sabbath Sets Us Apart "Say to the sons of Yisrael, 'You must guard my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am Yehovah, who makes you holy. Guard the Sabbath, because it is holy to you.’” (Exodus 31:13-14)

  27. Now the One who created the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them was establishing a permanent memorial of his creative acts on the Seventh Day by establishing the seventh day as that time when all mankind is to stop all his own activity and separate the Sabbath from the other six days to honor and acknowledge the Creator of all. When we set the Sabbath apart for this purpose, we are keeping it holy.

  28. Did You Know… That When You Keep Yehovah’s Commandments You are Setting Yourself Apart from the World and All Religious Pretenders and Yehovah is Setting You Apart? In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as Yehovah is Holy

  29. Where is it written: “Be Holy For I Am Holy”? Leviticus 11:44-45 Leviticus 19:2 Leviticus 20:7 Leviticus 20:26 Leviticus 11-22 is therefore called “the Holiness Code”

  30. Yehovahsaid to Mosheh, "Speak to the entire assembly of Yisrael and say to them: 'Be holy because I, Yehovahyour Elohim, am holy. "'Each of you must respect his mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am Yehovahyour Elohim. "'Do not turn to idols or make gods of cast metal for yourselves. I am Yehovahyour Elohim. (Leviticus 19:1-4)

  31. Holy Living – The “Law of Loving Your Neighbor” Leviticus 19:11-18 • Do not steal. • Do not lie. • Do not deceive one another.  • Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your Elohim. I am Yehovah.

  32. Do not defraud your neighbor or rob him.  • Do not hold back the wages of a hired man overnight.  • Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your Elohim. I am Yehovah. • Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.  Do not go about spreading slander among your people.

  33. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor's life. I am Yehovah. • Do not hate your brother in your heart. • Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt.  • Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am Yehovah. (19:11-18)

  34. It is Yehovah Who Makes You Holy *Separate* yourselves and be holy, because I am Yehovahyour Elohim.  Keep my decrees and follow them. I am Yehovah, who makes you holy. (Leviticus 20:7-8) *Consecrate, dedicate, cause yourself to be separated

  35. The Law is Holy So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. (Romans 7:12)

  36. "'Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out. You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them. But I said to you, "You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey. “I am Yehovahyour Elohim, who has set you apart from the nations. (Lev 20:22-24)

  37. Did You Know… That When You Keep Yehovah’s Restrictions Regarding Sexuality You are Setting Yourself Apart from the World and All Pretenders? In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as Yehovah is Holy

  38. Paul’s Instructions About How to Live Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please Elohim, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Master Yeshuato do this more and more.  For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Master Yeshua. (1 Thessalonians 4:1-2)

  39. Holiness in the Sexual Arena It is Elohim's will that you should be holy (set apart): that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know Elohim; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. Yehovahwill punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.  For Elohim did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. (1 Thessalonians 4:3-7)

  40. "You shall not commit adultery.” (Exodus 20:14) "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.“ (20:17) "You shall not lust after your neighbor's wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor's house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.“ (Deuteronomy 5:21)

  41. Fleefrom sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from Elohim? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor Elohim with your body. (1 Corinthians 6:18-20)

  42. Vayikra (Leviticus) 18:1-24 According of some, these laws are done away with. Is there any New Testament evidence that these Levitical Laws pertaining to sexuality are still valid for the followers of Messiah?

  43. It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father's wife.  And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? (1Corinthians 5:1-3) Vayiqra 18:8: "Do not have sexual relations with your father's wife; that would dishonor your father."

  44. Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast-- as you really are. For Messiah, our Pesach lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth. (1 Corinthians 5:5-8)

  45. I have written you in my letter not to associate(separate from that one) with sexually immoral people-- not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.  But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. (1 Corinthians 5:9-12)

  46. Did You Know… That Watching Over Your Body to Keep It Clean is a Spiritual Act of Worship? In Doing So, You are Becoming Holy as Yehovah is Holy

  47. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of Elohim's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Elohim-- this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Elohim's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)

  48. I have written you quite boldly on some points, as if to remind you of them again, because of the grace Elohim gave me to be a minister of Messiah Yeshuato the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of Elohim, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to Elohim, set apart by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:15-16)

  49. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness.  When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.  What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!  But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to Elohim, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. (Romans 6:19-22)
