  1. Geospatial One-Stop and The National MapTools for Data Access Governmental Data Access Webinar October 15, 2009 Rob Dollison rdollison@usgs.gov

  2. 1. Objective of the Initiative

  3. Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) • Provide online discovery and access to geospatial resources (data, applications, web sites) across all levels of government • Develop standards and models to support the exchange of data and facilitate web services • Promote partnerships among Federal, state, and local agencies • Reduce redundant investments and facilitate cost sharing Make it easier, faster and less expensive to find and use geospatial data

  4. Geospatial One-Stop Portal

  5. 2. GOS Summary & Background

  6. What is Geospatial One-Stop? • Two E-Government Geospatial Initiatives • Geospatial One-Stop (technical geographic component) • Geospatial Line of Business (Fed policy & services component) • Geospatial One-Stop • USGS serves as the Managing Partner • The National Geospatial Program (NGP) office uses GOS to bring increased visibility and implementation of theNSDI

  7. Evolving Spatial Data Infrastructures Services Architecture GIS Portals • Service Oriented • Focus on Content • Integration in Business Process Clearinghouses • Application focus • IT standards • Interoperable • System-oriented • Data focus • Geo-standards • Top down File Transfer • Ad hoc • Data focus • FTP transfer • Bottom up

  8. Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) Federal Data Sets State/Regional/Local Data Sets • Examples • USGS Hydrography • NGS Geodetic Control • BLM PLSS • DoD Defense Installations (DISDI) • Examples • North Carolina • San Francisco Bay Area(BARGC) National Metadata Catalog (GOS) Integrated National Data Sets • Examples • Transportation • Landmarks • Hydrography • Land Use Scientific Knowledge • Examples • Reports • Models • Applications

  9. Current Status Over 275,000 Total Records Over 2,500 in Marketplace 55% Fed – 45% NonFed Over 80,000 Visits/Mo.

  15. Search Results Visualization Data set footprints show in map List results are linked to map footprints to allow easy visualization of the coverage area of each dataset.

  16. Spatial Ranking • Includes first iteration of Spatial Ranking • Make spatial searches return local results before global results • Based on USGS-developed algorithm • Looks for how well the search extent matches the footprint of the metadata

  17. View Web Map Services on a Globe

  18. Partnership Marketplace • Discover New Data Acquisition Plans • Post Data Requests • Contact Owners – build partnerships and leverage investments
