Overall purpose of the project • The overall objective of the project is: • Improved food safety in Shanghai Municipality • The immediate objective is: • A report prepared analysing the present Shanghai food safety management system compared with the Danish food safety framework and management mechanisms from field to consumer (including EU regulations, DK legislation, guidelines and implementation)

  4. Why is Shanghai and food safety interesting? • It is the most important economic,financial and trade hub in China • Population: Over 23 million • Agriculture products consumption: 20,000 tons/day • Food import dependence rate: >70% (from other provinces) • GDP per capita: US$12,784 Shanghai

  5. Background • There is a growing demand of high quality and safe food in China. This is a major challenge for China where a number of incidents related to food safety has occurred in recent years • This is well recognised in China and food safety is already an important issue in China • Denmark is an internationally recognised leader in the food safety area and there is much that Shanghai can learn from the Danish experience

Partnership - Funding • The project is building on equal partnership with funding from both Shanghai and Denmark. • Wonders Information, Shanghai has received funding from Science & Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality for a study of the Danish food safety system • Knowledge Centre for Agriculture has received co-funding from Midtnet for assisting Wonders Information Technology in elaboration of a report on the Danish food safety system

Overall achievements • The project has contributed to document and disseminate knowledge on food safety in Shanghai and Denmark and established relationships between Danish and Chinese companies and authorities • The project is seen as a first step in the future cooperation between Shanghai and Denmark in the area of food safety to the benefit of both Shanghai and Denmark

Specific major achievements • A report analysing the present Shanghai food safety management system elaborated by Wonders • A report on the Danish food safety framework and management mechanisms from field to consumer compared with the Shanghai food safety system elaborated by Wonders in collaboration with all partners • A MoU between Wonders and the Knowledge Centre for Agriculture signed • Focus areas for future cooperation between Shanghai and Denmark regarding food safety identified

The report on the Danish food safety framework • A study course in Denmark for a delegation from Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, Shanghai Food Safety Committee Office and Wonders has formed the basis for the report • During the study course all Danish partners were visited • A binder with extensive documentation from the study course has been the major background material for the report

Next steps • Wonders will continue dialogue with Shanghai Food and Drug Administration regarding priority areas in food safety and traceability • Wonders and Knowledge Centre for Agriculture will prepare project proposal based on Shanghai Food and Drug Administration priorities and together explore funding possibilities • Science & Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality’s next funding of projects will be June/September 2013 – funding will be for ”research” and only with partners who can prove previous cooperation
