Sustainability at The Ohio State University • Energy Services and Sustainability (sustainability office) established in 2006 – one of the first offices of its kind formed in higher education in the United States • President Gee signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment – over 650 institutions have signed committing their campuses to achieving carbon neutrality • Carbon neutrality, or having a net zero carbon footprint, refers to achieving net zero carbon emissions by first reducing carbon emissions and then balancing the remaining amount of carbon released with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset, or by carbon credits to make the difference. • Carbon is generated at Ohio State through electricity use, heating and cooling, transportation, etc. • Ron Sega, PhD joined the university in 2010 and formed the Office of Energy and the Environment which expanded sustainability efforts to focus on academics, research, policy, outreach, and operations • Energy Services and Sustainability is working with campus partners to develop a strategic plan to increase Ohio State’s sustainability performance • The plan focuses on energy (electricity, heating/cooling, water), sustainable materials management, academics & research, ecological function, and transportation

What is the Green Buckeye Certification? • Checklist to see current sustainable practices by an individual, group, office, or department. • Roadmap for how to reduce your environmental footprint. • Sections include: • Communication and Education • Energy Efficiency and Conservation • Recycling and Waste Reduction • Water Conservation • Purchasing 75% Colleagues 75% Actions (minus N/A) For certification…

Why should you participate? • Support Ohio State’s sustainability goals by increasing awareness and inspiring action. • Encourage co-workers to reduce energy consumption, increase recycling, and improve efficiency. • Communicate that your office is certified by the university to be an environmentally supportive office.
