  5. Point of Care - Service • HH staff provide diabetes education during general diabetes clinics every Tues and Friday morning. • Fosters relationship with persons with diabetes • Good avenue for recruiting

  7. ~Act In Time~Learn the Warning Signs of a Heart Attack • Chest discomfort. Discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. • Shortness of breath. Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort. • Other symptoms.   11. Portion Control + Energy Density= 800 calories • The VolumeTrics Strategy: Substituting low energy dense foods in place of high energy dense foods For fewer calories.

  12. What Is Energy Density? • It’s the calories (energy) in a gram of food

Foods are in three categories: • High-energy-dense foods: 4 - 9 calories per gram e.g., cookies, crackers, butter, bacon • Medium-energy-dense foods: 1.5 - 4 calories per gram e.g., bagels, dried fruit, meat, low-fat mozzarella • Very Low and Low-energy-dense foods: 0 - 1.5 calories per gram e.g., most fresh fruits and vegetables, fat-free yogurt, broth-based soups

  14. Volume, Density, and Calories in Weight Management • Feeling full is one reason people stop eating. • Volume affects the feeling of being full. • Water and fiber increase volume and reduce energy density.

  15. Water + Fiber + Protein = Fullness • Drinking water will not reduce hunger. Water has to be in the food. • Fiber helps you feel fuller and has been shown to reduce calorie intake. • High-protein foods low in fat • decrease hunger • prolong fullness • more than high fat or carbohydrate foods
