  1. Requirement for“Real-Time AV Data Recording” Table of Contents 1. Activity Report for Real-Time AV Data Recording 2. Requirement from DVD Forum 3. Issues on AV File Allocation 4. Issues on AV Data Recording/Playback 5. Summary February 17 , 1999 Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.

  2. Activity Report for Real-Time AV Data Recording File System Layer AV extent #1 AV extent #2 AV extent #3 AV extent #4 AV extent #5 Spare Area Physical Layer Replaced by Spare ECC Block Defective sector registered on PDL Defective ECC Block detected on AV Recording Zone boundary Defective ECC Block registered on SDL - AV File allocation method considering location of non-contiguous areas will be studied to guarantee minimum bit rate for AV data recording/playback. - Logical unit skips defective ECC blocks newly detected on AV data recording. - Access performance of a logical unit should be recommended in order to guarantee minimum bit rate for Real-Time AV data recording/playback.

  3. Requirement from DVD Forum WG1/Ad-hoc8 concluded the technical requirements for Drive Interface functions as follows: (1) To report allocation data of physically non-contiguous areas such as: - Defective sectors registered in PDL/SDL and - Zone Boundaries (2) To write AV data continuously on skipping defective ECC blocks if detected (“Skip Write Operation”) (3) To report allocation data of skipped defective ECC blocks on “Skip Write Operation” (4) To read AV data continuously, even if defective ECC block is detected (5) To report allocation data of erroneous AV data transferred on Read operation

  4. Issues on AV File Allocation Current Mt.Fuji3 Spec - GET PERFORMANCE command reports allocation data of physically non-contiguous areas. > Device compatibility for real-time AV playback may not be guaranteed because delay time in performance data depends on device access performance. > Delay time to access spare block is not useful for AV data recording because linear replacement algorithm is not applied for AV data recording. To Support AV File Allocation - More general description for delay time will suitable. (ex.) The number of tracks or sectors to be skipped - Information to decide cause of delay should be added to returned data.

  5. Issues on AV Data Recording/Playback Current Mt.Fuji3 Spec - There is no description for AV Recording using “Skip Write Operation”. > How to limit the number of skipped ECC blocks on write operation. > Error reporting method for excess of the limitation. > How to report allocation data of skipped defective ECC block. - “Read Continuous” mode is not enough to playback AV data. > How to report allocation data of erroneous data transferred to a host. To support AV Data Recording/Playback - Description for “Skip Write Operation” shall be added to Model Section. - Modification of current commands or new command shall be needed to support “Skip Write Operation”. - New command to report allocation data for skipped defective blocks on “Skip Write Operation”. - New AV playback mode or command shall be defined.

  6. Summary • Requirement from DVD Forum to support Real-Time AV data recording/playback was explained. • Issues on current Mt.Fuji3 specification to support Real-Time AV data recording/playback was pointed out. • MEI will propose to add detail model description and new command set in the next Mt.Fuji4 meeting.
