  2. Present Subjunctive • The verb tenses which we have been using up till now are called Indicative Mode used to express what we know or believe to be factual or true. • The subjunctive mode consists of verb tenses used to talk about things which are not facts, such as hopes, persuasion, doubt, emotion and the like. *You use the indicative to make a plain statement or fact. You use the subjunctive after verbs and expressions that involve uncertainty.

  4. Indicative: Haces ejercicio. You do exercise. • Subjunctive: Es necesario que hagas ejercicio. • Remember that, as with usted commands, you have to change the spelling for some verbs to keep pronunciation the same. llegar = llegue buscar = busque cruzar = cruce

  5. Present Subjunctive • Because we are talking about things like hopes, persuasion, doubt, emotion and like we must use ojalá • The present subjunctive is always used after the expression ojalá (que), which came to Spanish from an Arabic expression meaning “May Allah grant that.” In modern times, Today, it means I hope (that)… • The use of que is optional after ojalá • Two useful expressions are Ojalá que sí (I hope so) and Ojalá que no(I hope not). • -¿Vamos a Perder? …. Ojalá que no. • -¿Vas a jugar tú?... Ojalá que sí.

  6. Ejemplos • When using the subjunctive to express a hope or a wish, such as when you want someone else to do something. • He knows what he wants… but he’s not sure she will take the elevator. • El señor Zavala quiere que Isabel tome el ascensor. • Señor Zavala wants Isabel to take the elevator.
