  2. Programming in the Region • 14 Country Offices (18 Countries); • HIV and AIDS focused projects (emphasis on access to services - e.g. support for OVC; enhancing technical and organizational capacity of HBC groups;) • Mainstreaming HIV and AIDS in existing and new livelihoods, food security, income security, etc. projects • Internal workplace policy and related programmes (ourselves and our partners); • Policy and advocacy work, especially internationally on link between HIV & AIDS and food security.

  3. Areas of Increasing Emphasis • Deeper understanding and more meaningful response to economic and social factors influencing women & girls’ vulnerability to HIV infection and the impacts of AIDS. • Strengthening our evidence base for influencing programming, including advocacy activities at all levels. • More deliberate understanding and response to the of bi-directional links between HIV and food/income security. • New programming initiatives in social protection (Zambia, Lesotho, others). • Advocating for PEOPLE (and gender differentiation) in the climate change discourse.

  4. Existing & On-going Work Relevant to Renewal • CARE provides a “live project environment” in which to conduct operational research. • Collaboration on 2 studies in Renewal 1. • Possible collaboration in Renewal 2 (Social Protection (Zambia), Tracking Dynamics (Zimbabwe). • Complementary work – NIH/Univ of Wisconsin in Malawi.
