  4. History • Nissan Motors is a global auto manufacturer with a rich history dating back to the turn of the 20th century. It was a pioneer in the Japanese motor vehicle industry with its popular DAT and later Datsun Cars. The company, after brief setbacks after World War II, modernized rapidly in the 1960s and became a major U.S. player by the 1970s. Nissan began to manufacture its vehicles in the United States by the 1980s and launched a luxury brand by the 1990s. In 1999, it signed a major deal with French auto company Renault. Today it is a major global auto manufacturer.

  8. Employees • 155,099 • Workers at the Nissan automobile plant here were called in for overtime work on a recent Saturday to meet brisk orders for Sentara cars and Pathfinder trucks. At the midday break that Saturday, about 1,000 workers who had been called in for the day shift were greeted by the sight of their supervisors grilling a hamburger lunch for everyone. • Management might have felt a free lunch was in order, given the vote by its workers on July 26 to reject the United Automobile Workers union as a bargaining agent. But the free lunch was by no means an unusual event at the plant. Nissan Motor Manufacturing USA has gone to extraordinary lengths to win the loyalty of its employees since opening this plant in 1983. • Activities like company picnics and table tennis, in fact, are only a minor part of the company's strategy, which is based on the philosophy that loyal and contented employees will build better automobiles more economically than workers who feel they are adversaries to management.
