  3. European Research Council • ‘To encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-initiated frontier research across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence’

ERC in Horizon 2020 • To fund the best ‘frontier research’ proposals submitted by excellent researchers, with scientific excellence as the sole evaluation criterion. • Will fund ‘individual’ teams, led by a Principal Investigator, on the basis of pan-European competition. • Programme of work • Will operate on a ‘bottom-up’ basis, without pre-determined research priorities.
