Experience • Studies Health Informatics in Athens (Erasmus) 1991-1992 • Taught on that course (1995-1997) - Expert Systems in Medicine • TCD 1992-1998: EU FP Projects: Openlabs, Synapses etc. Worked with Prof Rory O’Moore St James’s • Taught for one year on M.Sc in Health Informatics, TCD • Lead development of M.Sc in Health Informatics IT Tralee 2006, Modularised course 2009

  4. Syllabus – aligned to Nursing M.Sc • Healthcare Informatics • Evidence Based Practice • Advancing Personal Effectiveness in Leadership • Quantitative Analysis and Research Methods • Research Project • Electives: HCI, Mobile Computing, Strategic IT Management, Document Engineering

  5. Challenges • Reaching a common understanding with Nursing – what is Nursing Informatics? • Dearth of skilled staff and resources • Tuition Fees – initially set at 5000 euro • Advertising – no Career path (HSE?) • Need for basic IT skills as a pre-requisite for M.Sc. • “Cut non-viable programmes; cut intake, reduced elective choice” – President of IT Tralee, 18 June 2010 – the politics in a changing climate – Hunt Report?

Opportunities • “In future there will be a strong convergence of nursing and IT and the Island of Ireland has an opportunity to provide innovative multidisciplinary training in this direction to support the deployment of CH technologies “ “Connected Health in Ireland” D Bogan, 2010 • “Specific connected health training should be considered within healthcare training, such as module delivery within clinical & nursing degree courses"

What Needs Doing • A National Strategy for Healthcare Informatics • Identify skills needs (HSE, Nursing Informatics Group, other Informatics stakeholders) • Benchmark “Health Informatics”/”Nursing Informatics” as a discipline (Graham Wright and Peter Murray, CHIRAD, National Nursing Informatics Project - Canada, HIQA?) • Input from An Board Altranaisin identifying and setting learning outcomes for Informatics modules on B.Sc in Nursing

  8. Vision There are 13 IoTs in Ireland; many of which have Nursing Schools on Campus: Athlone, Dundalk, GMIT, ITT, LYIT, WIT – along with DCU, NUIG, TCD, UCC, UCD, UL
