La storia si svolge a Budapest, capitale dell’Ungheria, nei primi anni del 1900 e tratta di due “bande” di ragazzi (“I ragazzi della via Paal” e le “camicie rosse” dell’orto botanico) in lotta tra di loro per il predominio nel centro della città sull’unica area libera, adiacente ad una segheria e sede della banda dei ragazzi della via Paal, nella quale potere giocare.
