Why are we doing them? • How will LaGuardia develop & support ePortfolio? • What do ePortfolios look like? What is in them? • What do students & faculty say about ePortfolio? • How can you integrate ePortfolios into your teaching?

What is an ePortfolio? ePortfolio: A collection of work and reflections stored digitally and made available on the Web The LaGuardia Method: collect, select, reflect, connect • Collect (deposit) class work and other materials. • Select work samples that show learning & growth. • Reflect on learning and identify evidence of growth. • Connect • Build links across classes, disciplines & semesters • Strengthen connection between school, community and work • Use the Web to share with other students, faculty, family, employers, etc.

  6. What are the 3 levels of ePortfolio? • Basic: Filling in forms, using a Blackboard 6 interface. No web design skill required. • Intermediate: Adapting templates, using Netscape Composer. Entry-level web design. • Advanced: No template. Uses sophisticated web design programs (i.e. Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash). An option for students w/advanced technical skills.

Building and maintaining an ePortfolio can help students: • Deepen and take more responsibility for learning • Inform employers about skills and experience • Present themselves to 4 year colleges • Share their growth with family and friends • Develop technical skills in web design

As the project develops, ePortfolios will help faculty address broad needs and challenges: • Motivating students: • Supporting multiple learning styles. • Gaining richer insight into our students and their learning • Developing greater understanding of teaching & learning across disciplines.

As it grows, the ePortfolio can help the College achieve key institutional goals: • Build student engagement in learning • Advance advisement for transfer & career • Support faculty-led holistic Program Assessment process • Identify areas for additional support resources

US Department of Education, Title V Grant (with New York City College of Technology) • Faculty Research Team, 2001-2 • Pilot Testing: 2002-2003 • Integration into new First Year Academies, 2003-5 • Broad faculty experimentation (ePortfolio Explorer, ESL etc.), 2004-5 Preliminary data collected for the funder shows key gains for students: increased engagement in learning & critical thinking, satisfaction with college, course completion rates

  29. What do students like about ePortfolio? The vast majority of students felt ePortfolio made their courses more interesting and helped them to learn. When asked what they liked about ePortfolio, they said: “It gave me the opportunity to examine my own career goals and ambitions for life.” “The best part of creating the ePortfolio was instead of the teacher doing everything for us, they directed us step by step, and worked with us individually.” “The best thing was finding out more about myself and learning to be more open.” “It helps students to find out what their career goals are.” “Now I have all my work in one place.” “I learned how to create my own page.” “Using my own original ideas to create it.”
