  1. First Grade Room 348 Newsletter Reading: This month we will be working on reaching our monthly reading goals. Please make sure your child reads each night. The only way to become a better reader is to read! Our phonics focus for the month will be short o, e, and u. The comprehension skills we will work on are sequencing, questioning, and story structure. We will continue to work on learning the parts of a sentence (subject and predicate or naming and telling part) as well as introduce plural nouns, synonyms, and antonyms. We are beginning to learn to write topic sentences and supporting detail sentences. Make sure to check out our fall writing in the hall at conference time. Math: We have just begun unit 3 in math. In this unit we will learn time to the half hour, odd/even number, and patterns. In addition, we will work hard on counting combinations of pennies, nickels, and dimes. Please practice counting coins whenever you can with your child. It is good practice and a life skill we all need. I will send home a new counting homework sheet when 2nd quarter begins (Nov. 12).
