  2. 1. The Puritans who settled in N. America • Placed little importance on education beyond the fundamentals of reading and writing • Believed education was critical and established a sophisticated education system • Insisted that the only thing anybody needed to know was to be found in the Holy Bible • Did not have families with them and saw no need to establish an education system • Believed in education only within the home for fear of sinful influences in a public school

The Puritans who settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony wanted their settlement to be primarily • A place where they could get away from persecution • An example to the rest of the world • A place where they would have the opportunity to prosper free from government regulation • A society that practiced complete separation of church and state • A pluralistic society in which all would be free to practice and teach their beliefs

French and Spanish American colonies differed from those of England • Because the English refused slavery on religious principles, while France and Spain were thriving on such practices • Because natives proved difficult to convert to Catholicism and therefore the Spanish and French enacted brutal policies • In that the English were much more tolerant and established policies of inclusion, unlike the exclusion of France and Spain • Since France and Spain placed greater emphasis on developing agricultural colonies and England created mercantile settlements • Because French and Spanish settlements experienced much more cultural mixing between Europeans and natives

For the most part, the Chesapeake colonists during the 17th c. • Maintained close emotional and political ties to England • Established a unique identity that was truly American • Increasingly demanded independence from England • Advocated closer diplomatic relations with New France • Established numerous towns and institutions to model England

All of the following contributed to the success and stability of the New England colonies, and the bare survival of the Chesapeake Bay colonies EXCEPT • N.E. colonists tended to arrive in family units while the vast majority of Chesapeake Bay colonists were young single males who arrived as indentured servants • The Chesapeake Bay region had a much higher death rate among it colonists than did the N.E. region • Women were treated more as equals in the N.E. colonies than they were in Chesapeake Bay region, making it more difficult to attract women to the Chesapeake Bay • The ratio of males to females in the Chesapeake Bay was much more imbalanced then in New England, making it more difficult for males in Chesapeake Bay to find wives and start families • The population increased faster in N.E., allowing for the development of stable communities, than it did in the Chesapeake Bay region
