The lab now (2004)

  • 1 .6 10-6 fast neutrons/cm2/s from

  • rock/concrete radioactivity

  • air continuously renewed : 2 vol/hour

  • very low Rn concentration 5-10 Bq/ m3

  • 1750 rock thickness

  • 4800 mwe

  • 4 muons /m2/ day

  • Upgrade of cooling unit for the lab : from 60 kW to 230 kW cooling power-end 2004

    • Use air from tunnel as « cold source »

with E = 260 MeV (see later CERN beams) then L= 130 km

compare amplitudes for neutrinos and antineutrinos

S (sun) ~ 0.04 for LMA

but need high intensity n beam ie MW proton beam…

An ideal complementary ne beam :

the « beta beam »

  • Concept proposed byPiero Zucchelli at CERN

  • Produce radioactive ions (ISOL technique), 6He and 18Ne

  • Accelerate them in the CERN accelerator complex up to G of order 100, to produce 0.3 GeV neutrinos

  • Store ions in a storage ring with long straight sections aimed at a far detector

  • Advantages :

  • strongly focussed neutrino beam due to small Q value of beta decays

  • very pure flavour composition ( n m contamination ~ 10 -4 )

  • perfectly known energy spectrumhttp://beta-beam.web.cern.ch/beta-beam/

    • Central location in Europe, easy access by train, car, plane, ski…

    • Right distance to CERN for n osc studies

  • Formation of collaboration
