  1. Inquiring Minds Want to Grow: Building Intentional Practice Jeff C. Marshall Clemson University NSTA Presentation March, 2010

  2. Do you facilitate clear, meaningful, and intentional learning in your classrooms?

  3. Or, is your instruction and learning a series of mixed signals that hope for magical results?

  4. Three Support Structures to Guide Intentionality 4E x 2 Instructional Model EQUIP Dynamic WebTool

  5. What typifies your planning? Or??? And, what is the difference?

  6. 4E x 2 INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL Engage Re flect A s s e s s Explore Explain Extend Marshall, J. (2006)—See www.clemson.edu/iim for more details.

  7. Key Aspects of 4E x 2 Model • Check for prior knowledge and misconceptions • engage is more than motivate • Explore before Explain • break the paradigm of punch line before joke • Formative Assessment at EVERY stage of inquiry • not just summative evaluation • Be intentional about instructional decisions • review, remediate, or move on

  8. Checking for Understanding • What is the importance of Engage? • Why Explore BEFORE Explain? • Who should do the Explanation? • What is the value of the Extend?

  9. Moment to Reflect • How can the 4E x 2 Instructional Model be used to improve what you are already doing in the classroom?

  10. How cohesive is your teaching? Or??? What promotes more of the latter?

  11. EQUIP(Electronic Quality of Inquiry Protocol) • Four critical domains tie directly to student achievement: Instruction (How do I lead?) Discourse (How do we interact?) Assessment (How is instruction influenced by student achievement/knowledge?) Curriculum (What guides teaching and learning?) • EQUIP contains a descriptive rubric of 19 indicators tied to the above constructs • When you improve on EQUIP, learning increases!!!

  12. Now What? • How do I tackle all these things and maintain my sanity? • I need details!!!!

  13. Your Last Lesson • Let’s begin by thinking about your last lesson? • What made it effective? • Where did it need some work? • Most importantly, what did the student’s learn and how do I know they “got it?”

  14. Reflection #2 • What what are two indicators from EQUIP that I can target when I return to school? • What is my plan for doing so?

  15. Dynamic Webtool • Where do I go to see lesson plans that promote conceptual change? • www.clemson.edu/iim (select lesson plans then register—free to all registered users)

  16. Overview Video • Public Lesson • My Workspace • Creating New Lessons

  17. Reflection #3 • What can you do to become more intentional about your practice? • 4E x 2 Instructional Model • EQUIP • WebTool • How will you use any of the supports discussed today?
