  4. What Gap?

  5. This Gap! Science Teachers’ frustration: The Students Should Know This Math Already! WHAT Do YOU Think? Name a math / algebraic concept your kids appear to be lacking fluency in application in science. … Student made resource available to help Bridge these Ideas for YOU!! Kids’ Creativity

  6. Scientific Notation & Dimensional Analysis Balancing Equations Density = mass/ volume slope as a decimal Velocity & Acceleration Hydronium & Hydroxide concentrations; Carbon dating & Radioactive Decay Simplifying Rational Expressions Simplifying / solving Algebraic Equations Equations of lines and slope as a fraction Quadratic Equations Logarithmic & Exponential behavior Both Science & Math Teachers MUST take responsibility for filling the Gap Together!S.T.E………..…M

  7. Three Steps to Closing the STE…M Gap Develop student problem solving & Scientific Inquiry through Metacognition Communication between Math & Science teachers Take advantage of 21st Century Web 2.0 Tools: A. 21st C. Social Learning B. Access STEM Projects C. Publish students’ analysis of STE…M Gap ideas D. Flip Your own Classroom! Math Science

Discovery / STEM Groups Make Student class groups! No excuses for missing class/ assignment. Post & Answer Peers Q’s Extended absence communication

  11. Now That’s Engaging! User Friendly and Fun. Beyond Powerpoint – Thinking and learning are not linear! Framework for the presentation: Holds the cohesiveness of all the video parts. Let’s Play to see how easy this really is! PREZI Back Up

  12. LOW Tech, Big Effect: Why use a Video camera? Steps to effective 21st Cent. Publishing • Make a video of your STEM Problem • Put the video onto your computer, using Flip software. • Upload video to Youtube under your own account. – YES - Youtube! • Use the Youtube URL or Embed code to add to your Final Prezi or Powerpoint.

  13. 21st Century Classroom STEMActionHow do we do it? (TIME???) 1. Set up Edmodo – use it for assignments, documents test announcements, encourage usage daily with token rewards. 2. One day in the computer lab to get kids started on edmodo and introduce prezi and how video can be uploaded. 3. Kids commit & design individual 21st century STEM project. 4. Give a rubric and determine assessment impact realtive to expectations. Be sure to have administrative support. 5. Students must show progress at different benchmark dates through the process.

  14. Flatten Learning: Problem solve & connect with Other 21st Century Tools! Prezi v.s. Powerpoint Flip Video & Digital picturesMWSNAP Movie maker & Animoto Youtube / TeacherTube Extranormal Wikispaces

  15. 2011 Top STEM Resources

  16. Rubric for STEM Project ONE project per semester : paired? Consider the summative value… Set up a “round robin” with laptops where students go through the room grading various presentations, critiquing work, noting problems or concerns. Rubistar Rubric 2nd Sem

  17. Accenting 21stC. Problem solving in the classroom DR Lodge McCammon FLIPS the Classroom with FIZZ AP Testing makes me flip out! Here is a quick Intro movie!

  18. Concerns? What concerns do you have about attempting STEM projects with your students?

  19. Flip / digital camera video *Video in small parts. *Low tech but 21st Century! *Download to computer then upload to youtube for “smaller” version, for prezi. *Use Flip video to “Fix” videos out on the web. *Use a projector to re-record Prezi: Foundation of presentation Only! Don’t zoom in until you have finished, creating a path. Use Transition wisely – sea sickness can occur! If you can put other web 2.0 into youtube,it transfers seamlessly into prezi Educational email gives your kids more access ALWAYS SAVE a copy!! Internet Explorer Embedding Cleaner than Firefox Sharing My Learning Curve:

  20. Xtranormal FREE but restricted.. Best for intro or conclusion / segways Use your flip camera… Animoto: Free educator code access Keep video clips small 8 sec max recommended, Use the available music. Rendering takes a lot of time – sight has busy times. Most people with problems use their own music or too much video Sharing My learning curve Siemen’s Free Resources & Webinars! Webinars

  23. I had Your concerns too… • How am I going to fit this into what I am already doing? Your kids will do and learn more – you will be their guide – not much work for you • Some of my kids do not have internet access at home – what will they do? All you need is a flip camera and paper / markers • Kids can’t access youtube… in school! well… maybe they can! • How am I gong to grade all these? Actually – the kids will grade them … • But Why? Well – the kids’ work can be featured on your school website, shared out to Siemens STEM site or Discovery Education .. When kids Publish they ….

  26. 1. Metacognition The process of thinking about thinking. Flavell (1976) • "Metacognition refers to one's knowledge concerning one's own cognitive processes” • The learning-relevant properties of information or data. For Example: • I am engaging in metacognition if I notice that I am having more trouble learning A than B; • if it strikes me that I should double check C before accepting it as the final answer Flavell (1976)(p 232).

  27. Notes for slide 8 :Seating for discussion • Any pairing will work rows to pairs easily with one slide! • Metacognition : thinking about what you are thinking… • Metcgntn: essential to problemsolving and scientific method • Investigations: what do we know … progress to “what do we want to find out?”

  28. Formal Peer Support to encourage metacognition “Warm-up” Activities Peer Homework Check Paired coaching directed by teacher throughout discussions and example problems. Light pants/ Dark pants. Informal Peer Support: During formal lectures & discussions. During class discussion on homework issues. Throughout classroom time allowed for homework. Notes slide 8 : Peer Coaching:Formal vs. Informal

  29. IN Marshfield…………. Where is the Gap? Successful implementation of Professional Learning Communities within Subject Major Learning Targets Defined within courses, developing common assessments within common course. Learning Targets are aligned and paced relative to vertical alignment within subject. CRC : resource to ensure every student is learning staffed by math & Science teachers reveal the next issue… …. We are about to address the GAP!

  30. Notes Edmodo: More than another conversation! • Share & Build resources together through the “Edmodo Library” • Take Polls of populations you are hooked up with for quick feedback. • Communicate with your students: • Secure social network for 21st century learners • Posting assignments, polling students, sharing resources, reminders, Test announcements.
