  1. Forums for Expression By Erica S, and Caitlin S

  2. What is A forum for Expression? Forum for expression is anything used to express thoughts or feelings. An example of forum for expression is a blog, or a student newspaper.

  3. What are the types of forums for student expression? • Political Expression (including content on matters of general public interest) • Artistic Expression • Commercial Expression, particularly when it also raises matters of legitimate public debate and concern.

  4. What rights are students entitled to under each type of expression? The rights stated in Amendment 1, explain the rights given to journalist under each type of expression. Students are entitled to political, and artistic expression, which give them precedence and protection of their ideas.

  5. What is prior review and how does it play a role in student journalism? Prior review means reading only. More specifically for student media, the term refers to the practice of school officials- or anyone in a position of authority outside the editorial staff- demanding that they be allowed to read (or preview) copy prior to publication and/or distribution.

  6. How do student publications become a particular type of forum for Expression? Can they change from one to another? How? *Open for Discussion!* What do you think?

  7. recent high school cases that are linked to forums for expression & how they are linked In 2009, Principal Dan Diercks issued two reprimands (sharp criticism/disapproval) to the student newspaper because of an article that was published. The paper was sued but the case was appealed by the court because, even though what the students wrote was just lighthearted humor, humor is protected, and the decision to appeal the case not only protects the freedom to make harmless jokes about the school but, more importantly, the freedom to talk about serious issues without fear that the newspaper will be shut down. Forums for expression explain how the paper has privileges but further laws indicate how much power the newspaper can have.

  8. How do forums for expression impact student journalists at shenendehowa? It limits what the Shen Pen, can say or do plus it also gives rights to the student newspaper. Also as journalism students they must know the boundary of how much they can publish in their articles.
