II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Importance of g beam • Performance test • Check the liquid xenon operation • Check the detector components • Check the detector stability • Check the detector resolution ( Energy resolution , Position resolution , Timing resolution ) • Energy calibration • ~50MeV region ( signal level ) • low ~ middle energy region • We want various energy g beams

II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Candidates of the g source • Using Radio Isotope ( ~ 5MeV ) ( 60Co : 1.33MeV , 88Y : 1.84MeV , Am/Be : 4.43 MeV ) • Using Laser Compton Scattering ( 20MeV ~ GeV ) ( TERAS @ AIST : 20MeV , 40MeV , and so on …) • Using Nuclear Reaction • 7Li(p,g)8Be : 17.6MeV (Ep=440keV , s~5mb) • 11B(p,g)12C : 22.6MeV (Ep=7.2MeV , s~120mb) • 9Be(3He,g)12C : 31.2MeV (EHe=6.5MeV , s~1.5mb) and so on … • Using p- beam ( 55 ~ 83 MeV ) (sharp edge of g energy from p-p gp0n process)

II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Laser Compton facility , TERAS @ AIST TERAS : Electron storage ring at AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology ) (Old , Electrotechnical Laboratory , Bureau of Electrocommunications) Laser Compton Scattering facility ; 2nd Laser :20MeV(max) g beam obtained 4th Laser :40MeV(max) g beam obtained g beam test has been performed calculated g beam energy spectrum at TERAS

II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Results , expected performance • Detector operation: • All components of the detector worked well ! • Resolution: • Energy : worse ( sE = 1.4 ~ 2.0 % expected ) • Position : sx = 7.2 ~ 11.8 mm ( sx = ~ 4 mm expected ) ( in FWHM respectively ) • Light absorption problem !! • Absorption length increased , 7cm g >3 m by Xenon purification • New g beam test planed @ TERAS in last October & February • Unfortunately , accelerator trouble happened again and again !!  • Next g beam test will be performed in late April .

Merits : various channels , easy Demerits : low rate , backgrounds

II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin g beam test @ UTTAC , Tsukuba univ. • Proton beam delivered by UTTAC (University of Tsukuba : Tandem Accelerator Center ) • Boron powder target hardened with epoxy resin • Counter : f5” x t5” NaI crystal with 5” PMT and 4 veto counters ( up , right , left and front side ) Proton beam NaI counter Veto counter Pb shield and collimator Scattering Chamber (target inside) g Coverage : 0.13%

II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Results of test experiment , using NaI Obtained Energy Spectrum Monte Carlo ( for NaI ) 5“ x 5” crystal 30” x 30” crystal Counting rate : ~ 16Hz  predicted rate : ~ 13Hz Backgrounds rate : 3Hz ( 0.3Hz after veto) Problems : neutron BGs and other reactions Next step : new target & using Xenon Monte Carlo (for Xenon)

Collision point Dipole g QF QD II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Other candidate • Timing resolution : • We’ve never measured the timing resolution of the Liquid Xenon detector , using high energy g beam . • Tagged g beam of the Laser Compton Scattering ( We plan this test on the next g beam test @ TERAS ) Tagging by scintillation counter Scattered electron Collision point LCS g beam Electrons in the storage ring Laser

II. g beam test JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Other candidate - cont’d • Using p- beam : • We shall also make in-suit calibration runs with p- beam ( using the sharp edges of g energy from p-pgp0n process ) • We plan this test in October @ PSI pE5 beam line ( This beam test will be performed by prototype detector ) 54.9 MeV 82.9 MeV MeV Liquid Xenon Detector g 175< p- 170< target g q p0(28MeV) gg g 54.9 MeV < E(g) < 82.9 MeV Solenoid coil Crystal counter

  16. EXTRA JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin Design work on the Final detector Design work almost complete. Construction will start in this summer

Summary JPS meeting Mar.‘03 @ Touhoku-gakuin • We plan the newm egsearch experiment @ PSI • and R&Ds are progressing now. • Our g beam test using prototype liquid xenon calorimeter @ TERAS has been suspended because of accelerator trouble , and the next g beam will be carried out with many improvements in late April. • We also tested using g from the nuclear reaction @ UTTAC , and confirmed the g beam function well. • We plan some tests ; • April : 20 & 40 MeV LCS g beam test @ TERAS • May : nuclear reaction g beam test @ UTTAC • October : p0ggg beam test @ PSI
