Imparfait • A descriptive past tense which indicates an ongoing state of being or a repeated or incomplete action. • The beginning and end state of being or action are not stated. • Can indicate any of the following: • Habitual actions or states of being. • Physical and emotion descriptions (time, weather, age, feelings). • Actions or states of an unspecified duration.

  9. Conjugating the Imparfait • The imparfait of all verbs – regular or irregular – is formed by dropping the –ons ending from the present nous form of the verb and adding the appropriate imparfait ending:

  10. Examples *Être is the only irregular verb in the imperfect. It has an irregular stem ét- but uses the same endings as all other verbs. Home

  11. Future • To form the future tense of -er and -ir verbs, add the appropriate ending to the infinitive. For -re verbs, drop the final e before adding the ending:

  14. Conditionnel • To form the conditional of -er and -ir verbs, add the appropriate ending to the infinitive. For -re verbs, drop the final E before adding the ending: *Irregular conditionnel stems are the same as the irregular stems used to form the future tense.

  16. Commands • There are only three grammatical persons that can be used in the imperative: tu, nous, and vous.

  18. Negative Commands • To make a negative command, place ne in front of the verb and the appropriate negative adverb after the verb: N’ayez jamais peur. Never be afraid. Ne parle pas! Don’t speak! Home
