Called by a new name • The term called used in acts 11:26 is always a divine speaking, utterance, or warning • Noah was warned of the flood – Hebrews 11:7 • Joseph was warned by god – matthew 2:12 • Cornelius was warned from god – acts 10:22 • God uttered a new name for his people – Isaiah 62:2 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

Called by a new name • People are typically called by their business and character: • Rahab the harlot – Hebrews 11:31 • Matthew the publican – matthew 10:3 • Luke the physician – colossians 4:14 • Jesus the carpenter – mark 6:3 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

Called by a new name • Christians are to conduct themselves in a way that is honorable and worthy of the name – James 2:9 • We are to remove ungodliness and worldliness from our lives – Titus 2:12 • Sin gives cause for unbelievers to blaspheme the name of god – romans 2:24 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

  5. Called by a new name • The name Christian did not originate from mockery, ridicule, or derision. Peter used the name in a positive manner – 1 peter 4:16 • The name that arose out of unbelief was “Nazarene” – acts 24:5 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

  6. A Christian is not… • MERELY A MORAL PERSON – ACTS 10:2 • THE PERSON WHO IS SAVED “BY FAITH ALONE” – JAMES 2:19, 24 • A PERSON THAT IS MERELY IMMERSED IN WATER – ACTS 19:5 • THE SIMPLE CHURCH GOER “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

A CHRISTIAN IS… • A DISCIPLE – ACTS 11:26 • DISCIPLES ARE TO BECOME LIKE THEIR TEACHERS – 1 CORINTHIANS 11:1 • The name that disciples are called will reveal whom they follow, e.g., Lutherans, Methodists, Christians, etc. • Following men is condemned – 1 Corinthians 1:12 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

A CHRISTIAN IS… • A part of the bride of Christ, the church – acts 11:26 • The gentiles would see the righteousness of god – Isaiah 62:2; acts 11:1; 15:17 • After the gentiles saw the righteousness of god, then they would be called by the new name – acts 11:26 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

A CHRISTIAN IS… • A part of the bride of Christ, the church – acts 11:26 • Believers would be married to the lord – Isaiah 62:4 • All Christians are members of his church – ephesians 5:23-27 • Those who are saved are added to his church by the lord – acts 2:41, 47 “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

How to become a christian • All those who were baptized and saved were added to the church – acts 2:40, 41 • Baptism is not…a formalistic church rite. • Baptism is not…something I do because I am already saved. • Baptism is not…working my way to heaven. “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26

How to become a christian • All those who were baptized and saved were added to the church – acts 2:40, 41 • Baptism is…an act of faith based upon my trust in the god of grace to forgive me of my sins. • Baptism is…an appeal to god for a good conscience. Will you become a Christian? “And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” Acts 11:26
